Theres a new author in town taking out vampires one smart-ass remark at a time.
"I started writing the book almost four years ago" says RM Gilmore, the
twenty-eight year old Fresnan and author of newly released Indie Book,
The Scene. "Dylan Hart was my first character and I fell in love with her
immediately."
And so do we! Dylan Hart has body issues, school debt and a wicked sense
of humor that cuts through crap like a straight-razor in a sorority house.
Not unlike Gilmore herself. "If I'm not laughing at something, or someone,
then I must be dead".
Gilmore has us laughing right along with her and her new character, the
frizzy-haired, freelance journalist and fat-bottom girl, Dylan Hart.
In this first novel of Dylan Hart's Odyssey of The Occult series, we
find Ms. Hart in her hometown of Los Angeles, California. Hookers have
been drained of their blood and their bodies scattered all over the San
Joaquin Valley. But when the media christens them "The Vampire Massacres"
Dylan's mercenary side kicks in. She decides to take advantage of dead
prostitutes by writing a book.
With help of paparazza, glamazon and best friend, Tatum Price, Dylan
Hart dives headlong into the deep-end of the blood pool that is LA's
underground Vamp Scene, with verbal guns a' blazing.
Do vampires exist? Dylan is convinced that they most certainly do not.
She meets, as she expects, the ludicrous and laughable "Count Cockula's"
of the vamp world, but Dylan also meets the unexpected. At the surreal
vampire club, Embrace, she meets the beautiful and ethereal, and perhaps,
even the deadly.
Her trash-talking and tough as nails exterior, begins to crack and we
also discover (as does Dylan herself) that she has a "creamy center".
Altruistic motivations supersede monetary ones and Dylan becomes a woman
on a mission, tracking the killers from LA to the Fresno Vamp Scene and
back again.
Gilmore's says "These aren't your daughters vampires" and she's right.
If your looking for "sparkly", moody, vamps you've got the wrong book. RM
Gilmore takes us into the murky world of sanquinarians, lifestyle vamps
who work, go to school, drink blood and live among us everyday.
The Scene leaves the reader wanting more of this unusual, not to mention
exceedingly creepy, lifestyle that Gilmore has introduced us to. She's
laid a solid foundation in The Scene for the rest of Dylan's Odyssey. Her
characters are interesting and funny with complex relationships that
appear to continue through book two and beyond. The Scene also has a good
solid mystery all it's own. It is a very impressive first effort by Gilmore.
Many seasoned authors haven't given such a satisfying read.
Gilmore has talent, but being an Indie author can be a hard row to hoe.
"I actually like being independent" she says. "I don't have to answer to
anyone. Now if I can only magically show readers the path to my novels I
will be set. When that will ever happen, I don't know. But for now, I'll
just keep on keepin' on!"
Her book may be hard to find but it's like working a mine and hitting a
gold seam. With RM Gilmore you have the feeling you may have
hit the mother lode.
