Downtown Fresno could potentially be a great place to not only live, but to have a great night out on the town. Currently though, it turns into a ghost town at about six o’clock with the exception to event nights like Art Hop. Downtown needs to be vitally revamped. How should it be revamped? It should probably start with sections of the Fulton Mall being torn up. The mall acts a like a cement barricade. It seems to be doing a really good job of keeping people out of the downtown area.
For those that want to save the “art,” I’m sure they are smart enough to find a way to preserve it or incorporate it into the remodel. I don’t believe that it would be destroying the artist’s legacy by tearing up the mall. Galleries change out their art all the time. The artists are usually not offended and their art tends to find a new home. Sometimes the work of one person needs to be sacrificed for the betterment of everyone else.
The benefits of doing something like this far outweigh the negatives. The work for doing the remodeling of the street will bring more jobs to Fresno. It will also make the area more attractive to both businesses and customers. This added business should be the spark that puts life back into downtown. And who knows, it could even turn the late night ghost town into a lively city.
