I had never been to Kearney Park before (for shame I know), so right off this month's night bike ride seemed like a lot fun. And on a beautiful spring morning, I am sure, it would have been an awesome ride. But we were riding at night, and the route is mostly rural and devoid of street lights. So it is dark.
Now, this should be part of the night-bike experience, I guess. It's just one I'd nevere encountered quite like this. Hint: if you're lights aren't quite up to snuff, find the guy with the brightest lights and keep up.
The ride was 20 miles round trip and the weather held up nicely. This was outside any of my normal routes, which is one of the things I like about the night-bike rides. The path we were on (is it a bike/jogging path? I couldn't tell) got tretcherous, at one point becoming completely overrun with downed palm fronds (which seemed to have been stacked directly on the path). With some manuvering and some slow going, eventually we made it out to the park and down to the mansion. Hight point of the trip. The place is spooky and looks a bit like the haunted mansion at Disneyland. I'd like to get out there and do a tour at some point.
Lowpoint of the trip: flat tires. At least three between all of the riders.
A good bike ride should be an adventure. I'm not sure if I quite believe that, but the ride was a good AND a bit of an adventure, so for argument's sake we'll say that's how it was planned.
