Thanks to Fresno Famous I won tickets to last Wednesday's "Spamalot" show at The Saroyan Theater! I attended with my teenage daughter who had only a limited experience with The Monty Python videography. My wife and I introduced my kids to Monty Python a few years ago but they didn't really care for it. Probably too young at the time.
I was hoping the Fresno area would repsond to a Broadway show of this type and the theater would be full and we would have similar shows in the future. The upcoming "Wicked" series will be the true test of the region especially with the poor economy and high prices for the tickets.
I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout for "Spamalot" as most of the orchestra area was packed ( I never looked up into the balcony to see how full it was). Our seats were near the sound board so I was sure we would have no problem hearing. When I saw "DirtyRotten Scoundrels" a few years ago as part of the Broadway series I had a hard time hearing the dialogue. I was hoping this would not be the case this time. I know the theater has an antiquated sound system and a lot of shows bring in thier own sound equipment for that reason.
I had a great time at the show. It was a combination of "The Holy Grail" movie and a parody of Broadway musicals. Some highlights were the French guards, the boy in distress Percy and the servant Pansy. As for the Broadway parody I enjoyed the actress who played the Diva. She was absolutely amazing: great voice and great sense of timing. The duet "The Song that Goes like This" and the solo "Diva's Lament" were fantastic and funny.
As far as the sound I only had trouble with understanding King Arthur. And as far as my daughter? She was laughing throughout and had a great time! I think Monty Python has made another convert. Time to dig out the DVD's again and see if the kids like them now.
Thanks again Fresno Famous. Great show and a great time! We hit the downtown Teazers on the way home as well. Nice ending to a great evening.
