If you're like us, you have a love/hate relationship with “Best of” lists and Reader Choice” polls.
While we care about Fresno and want to share the things we love most, “popular opinion” can be pretty crushing (yes, I'm talking about Applebee's).
That's why we started the Famous Choice Awards — a best of list for those who are big on blogs, community interaction (emphasis on action) and the entrepreneurial spirit. There's some some trash talk too.
This year's contest (it's year four) looks at 20 categories and runs through March 29. GO HERE TO VOTE. Winners will be announced in early April. Once again, winners will receive a whole lot of free press, and not much else, save for the knowledge that a certain subset of Fresnans love them.
Categories are:
Artist (non performance) — Give some love to your favorites in the visual arts.
Band — There are too many great local bands. Can you narrow it down to one? Can you try?
Bartender — Put the free drinks aside.
Blog, blogger or Web site — Yes, we suppose your Face Book page can count.
Controversy — Fresno has had its share this past year. Which was the most ... controversial?
Did-they-just-say-Fresno moment — This is the moment that put Fresno on the map, so to speak.
Do-gooder —Who's working hardest (or smartest) to make Fresno a better place?
Elected official — Sadly, Chief Dyer was not elected.
Event (established) — Weekly/monthly/or annually, these have become part of the fabric of Fresno. Which is your favorite?
Event (new) — The next generation starts now.
Famous Fresnan — There has to be someone more famous than Cher, right?
New business — Entrepreneurship is on the rise. At least from where we're sitting.
Old building — The place you wouldn't want torn down in the name of progress.
Performer (not a band) — Be it a writer, rapper, singer, dancer, violinist, guitar-shredder or comedian, who do you pay to see?
Place of worship — For those who do.
Promoter — They work hard to keep you entertained. Who does it best?
Reason to go north of Shaw — We just want to be divisive.
Reason to stay south of Belmont — For those who like slumming it (with hints of sarcasm).
Underrated business/restaurant — What you might call a hidden gem.
Venue — Club, coffee house or theater, where's your favorite place to see and be seen?

Will be listed soon after the voting ends. Voting is a bit different from last year, so you won't be able to see a running tab (sorry). On the upside, there shouldn't be any ballot stuffing.
Uhm...pretty much all the other categories are Tower District appropriate. So...You know...There's that.
I really wish you'd put a category called: "within a half mile of Vinland Elementary School" cuz then I could've voted for 'my mom's house'. Really. This is not a very nice poll if it's one in which I can't vote for my mom. I'll have to tell my mom her house is excluded. Thanks a lot. I really wish you guys'd think about such things beforehand.
