New York City's Urban Bush Women (UBW) is the kick-off event for CSU Summer Arts tenth anniversary at California State University, Fresno. Founded in 1984, this dance ensemble has performed extensively in New York City and has toured throughout the United States and Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. Fresno audience members will enjoy UBW's presentation of Walking with Pearl: Africa Diaries and Shelter, Sunday, June 29, 7:00 p.m. in the John Wright Theatre on the Fresno State campus. Tickets are priced for students, seniors, regular, and reserved seating. Parking is relaxed in specific lots for this production.
As part of the Summer Arts curriculum, UBW will be working closely with students enrolled in the CSU Summer Arts dance class. This dance troupe has a philosophy of encouraging cultural activity as an inherent part of community life. In training young artists, UBW gives equal consideration to an artist's creative and social cultural concerns and this community-focused vision is one of the reasons they have remained so popular with a variety of audiences.
From June 29 through July 25, students, faculty, and guest artists will be busy in sixteen intensive 2-week courses for credit. These master classes in the arts allow students to experience an intimate educational environment with world-renowned artists and also have the opportunity to see these artists perform professionally for the Fresno community. The students from each class prepare a culmination event that is free to the public. These student events have proved to be equally favored by audiences as the guest artist events.
