The site of the old Kerman High School, located on Clinton and Madera Ave, has been rumored to have been haunted for years. Strange lights have been seen floating between rooms even though the property has been fenced off for several decades.

The original Kerman High School was built in 1912 and served the Kerman area until a larger high school was needed and the current campus was built in 1967.
The property fell into disuse and was fenced off to keep trespassers out. Unfortunately this wasn't enough as on December 30, 1998 an arsonist set fire to the main building and it burned to the ground.
No one knows what these strange lights are, if there are spirit lights or something else. One has to wonder what would cause someone or something to haunt a school. Perhaps whatever it is feeds off the emotions from the students that walked the halls over the years. And it's possible that it still roams the debris of what used to be the old Kerman High School.
Interesting side note here. In 1995 several friends, having heard of the stories and wanting to check them out , went to the old school at night. As soon as they parked their car and got out several sheriff's cars pulled out and the officers drew guns on them thinking they were going to trespass. One has to wonder how many other people went to the school looking for ghosts.
Also let me add this. Please don't try to go here at night and search for ghosts. There's a fence around the property for a reason. Don't be that ghost hunting group who likes to hop fences late at night just to get a thrill. If you really want to investigate this location, find out who owns it and try to get permission. Don't ruin it for those out there who are actually serious about this.

I volunteered at the old Kerman High back in the mid-90's when the property owners wanted to refurbish most of the old buildings. Those few days we worked on those buildings we never experienced anything paranormal. Unless you count pigeons breaking glass as they flew out of second story windows. Those abandoned buildings were definitely creepy though....

If I remember correctly the owners did turn some of the buildings into a haunted house one year. That must have been around 1996-1997.

The old main building, even though abandoned, was absolutely beautiful. The old offices had nasty olive green colored carpets, which had large burn holes like someone had once tried to burn the building down previously. The classrooms had real slate black boards that overlapped so you could slide them back and forth. I remember the auditorium had graffiti written behind the stage from most of the old graduating classes. The auditorium seats had a stylized "K" for Kerman on the sides of them.

Someone has an old photo of the main building here https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1yY3Gp3CoukS0oz8bf3zyw

It's too bad someone torched it...
My husband John says the old high school is haunted! He and 4 other buddies were up in the attic above the auditorium, of course it was off limits, and they all felt "something". They said they saw "things" (thought they say someone besides the 5 who was really there) and felt like they were being "watched". There was rusty colored "stuff" smeared all over the walls (blood?). 2 of the 5 had to climb back down because they were afraid. It doesn't surprise my husband at all about the "lights" that have been seen. He says the building has ALWAYS been haunted. We were the last class to have graduated from the old school (1967) and feel badly that it now looks this way!
Later on in life when on duty for the fire dept, he and another fireman responded to a "grassfire" at the old high school. At that time, there were still the "barracks" buildings out in the back close to the football field. He said they had put out the fire and his "comrade" came over to him "kind of paranoid" and said "Lets GO" He asked if people lived in those houses, the barracks buildings? John said they used to and they had been used during the war as some kind of medical facilities. His companion firefighter said that he saw people in the buildings and when he went over to talk to them and make sure everyone was OK, there was no one there!
He thinks the hauntings are the souls of the "departed" military personnel that stayed in the "barracks buildings" until they were demolished and at that time, fled to the school and when the school was razed, their "lights" have no where else to go but through the "invisible" walls of the old school. He knows the stories are TRUE!!!
