Gig review: "Warps Your Mind" record-release show@Tokyo Garden, 8/5/2011

We're a band that, for the most part, plays when we're asked. It's a good gig if you can get it. You get to show up, play and go home. Someone else deals with the production and promotion. Someone else worries about whether the opening band is gonna show up on time and whether there will be an audience for them when they do. None of that happened on Friday night, but that's where my mind was, going in.

The opener actually showed up right on time and the crowd filled out nicely (and then some) and everything looked spectacular (thanks to Hide and Seek Gallery). A big thanks to everyone who cshowed and everyone involved.

Dale and Jocey: Dale Stewart is an old punk-rocker. He gave us one of our first shows (if not the very first). So, it seemed fitting to have him on the bill. His new band (which was just him and Jocey on bass) is less all-out rawkous, but still has some great catchy songs. Would they have sounded better with a drummer behind them? Maybe, but who cares? What I liked: The banter between Dale and Jocey was golden. Read my review of the band's album "Water Wars.

The Quiet Americans: The Quiet Americans? More like the not-so-Quiet Americans. That was the joke of the night. Seriously, I'm not sure how many times someone tweeted some incarnation of those words. It was a lot. Of course, guitarist Luke Giffen has a lot of pedals and likes to use them and drummer Eli Reyes is just a monster, so yeah, the band is loud. But layered under all that sound are some great tunes. Giffen showed he is a dynamic front man.

Our set: 18-songs and it still felt like a short set. We blasted through the entire 7-inch, plus a couple of new songs and a bunch of old ones, and still did an extra one at the end, because, it felt like the thing to do. I can't imagine having to do a full  hour's set. There were a couple of "special guests" dancers. They had fishnet and hotpants. Super.

Check out some video.

The download card is for people like myself who don't have a record player (but really want to get one now) to play the album on. So you can go to the website on the card and enter the info and download the album via mp3.

Gotta say I love the album. You guys are seriously one of my favorite local bands.

This was a great gig. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. Heard some good music. Got to visit with some folks I hadn't talked to in a while. Dale and Jocey's set was strong, and I agree with the above that it was a kick hearing the banter between the two of them. It'll Grow Back's set was punk rockin' music that made you want to move. Good stuff.

And then next day...I had a cool record to enjoy:
the sound was beefy and full----not every punk rock record I have can say this.
The packaging was a lot of fun and felt like you got something for your money:
There was a sticker, a button, a download card [what's that for?], and even the little record jacket was cool--with a little tiny paper record sleve inside. Like the show, it was a good and complete package.

(hey, and Toshi & Tommy were wearing It'll Grow Back t-shirts....that's going the whole 9 yards!)
