Here's a new word for you early adopter-tech types: Nano-casting.

Or micro-casting.

Or, niche casting.

Or simply, podcasting to the a small, well-defined audience. Which is probably ALL podcasting, but whatever.

In any case, we've got another installment of Flowing with Famous, YOUR Fresno nano-cast, where you will here Famous Whitewater and Mike Seay talk about: Fresno music venues and parking lot shoot-ups, the Mayor, Bill McEwen, the Fresno's Bee's new online pay structure, Christmas Tree Lane and more.

so, it's like $70 a year for the + subscription. don't know if i'll pony up that. also, i found an interesting workaround and have been able to access the beehive a different way.

I saw this on Twitter and wanted to ask you about it. I've been waiting for a Beehive user to hit that wall, so I could get their thoughts.

So: I am all for "free" media. I was pissed when television went digital because I had to buy some fancy converter to run my TV.

Question (and I am not leading here): You obviously look at the Beehive/Bee etc. a lot. Is the digital subscription price more than you are willing to pay for that service? If so, what would you be willing to pay? If the answer is nothing, then at least in this instance, us digital media types have a BIG problem, right?

As for the number of views, it could be that Fresnobee/Beehive and the various blogs sites (minus Famous) are linked. So 15 views per month for the package, not per site. I don't rightly know.

1st part of problem - who knows exactly what is linked. it seems that beehive & bee are on that hit number, but famous isn't. i'd say i'm on the beehive the most of the three, and i may have to save my mcclatchy clicks for them and avoid the bee altogether so i can still get all the valuable content beehive produces.

2nd part of the problem - i call it the drug dealer syndrome. we're given so much free content, and for so long, that it's hard to roll back the clock and say, 'now you've got to pay.' i think a lot of people will just find other outlets. (this has some quality issues that can spill out.) i don't expect mcclatchy as a company or its employees to feel any sympathy - it's a business, got to meet costs.

3rd part - i'm lazy. i admit, i don't even know what the digital subscription costs, or what it gets me. i didn't look into it. i don't know what a current subscription to the print costs either. we'll see over time if the amount of free i get from mcclatchy is such that i can get by, or if i'll have to buy a digital subscription.

i think it's interesting to look @ what facebook, instagram and other digital media are doing to meet this issue. and, thinking of the proposed change in instagram's t.o.s. so they could better monetize, people showed that they don't want to pay, and they don't want to have their content monetized. people went apeshit and instagram caved...for now.

honestly, i don't know what it's worth to me on a monetary level. maybe once i actually see the cost/benefit i'll have an actual answer.

Thanks for sharing. What happening right now is super interesting. For what it's worth, I get the feeling the Bee (and McClatchy in general) will make a big push this year to offer and distribute content that is better suited to digital platforms and have a higher valuation with customers. Which could prove to be a big move forward for both the paper and should be exciting for users/readers. It may even have some residual benefits here on Famous, who knows. Unfortunately, there will likely be some collateral fallout in the mean time.

btw, i've already been bounced off the fresno bee & beehive due to my count since the service started. i'm sort of surprised that i can still use famous w/o issue.

i think you're wrong about the amount of people that use sites like the fresno bee, beehive & famous 15 or more times a month. i also think you're underestimating how much the internet generation is already a believer in free online content and buck every time a charge is added. this will drive down the bee's online views.
