Fresno Famous

I hate you. Now give me money.

If you're on Facebook, read The Bee or watch evening news, you've heard about Walmart's Facebook giveaway of $1M to the community that, essentially, asks for it most.

The plug: "The community with the most support will receive $1 million to fight hunger from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation. The next five most supported communities will each receive $100,000."

The catch? You have to hit the"Like" button. So every media outlet and most active Facebook users in the Fresno area (myself included) has been plugging this on Facebook like no other.

The problem? I don't "Like" Walmart. At all. And I don't like having to "Like" them to get money for our community.

BUT I LIKE MONEY. I like fighting hunger. I like the idea of $1M coming into this community and helping our needy residents.

But it still feels ICKY.

I'm not the only one with issues here. As James Collier of TasteFresno posted on Facebook, "Providing essentials to neighbors in need should not be a competition."

What are your thoughts?

I'm not a huge fan of Walmart either, but at least they do give back the community with giveaways such as this.

in respose to james' twitter/fb post, i replied:

"i think its about time gigantic corporate entities spent billions on social issues.

you may not like walmart, they have done some bad things as a corporation, but we always look to government to help with big social issues -- and they have done bad things too."

I put aside my personal dislike for Walmart toward a good cause.

Well, I "like" that you're posting on Famous now.
