After ArtHop
November 1, 2007
So, you're not meaning to miss ArtHop tonight. Except it's Thursday and after work and maybe you're a little wrecked from Halloween.
Don't let you're cool friends make you feel bad. It's not the end of the world.
Here's a little secret: The art’s gonna be there all month.
Famous gives some quick picks for November: (Feel free to add your own if you got them).
“Contemporary Comtemporaneo,” featuring Walfred Aguilar Rodriguez and Nigel Robertson
Fresno Art Museum, 2233 N. First St.
11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays to Sundays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, through November
(559) 441-4221, www.myspace.com/nigelrobertson
Here’s the rub: You take one promising artist visiting from Mexico, pair him up with one of Fresno’s finest, then step back and see what they create.
Walfred Aguilar Rodriguez is from Oaxaca and creates abstracts in bright bold colors.
Nigel Robertson is from Fresno and paints the dark, scary stuff.
He should be well known to Famous readers. He lives at the Pearl Building (that’s in the Cultural Arts District) and recently moved back into Broadway Studios, once home to Fresno’s favorite expat artists.
The pair has been working together since late September.
“Threads,” Diana Griffin and works from Hilda Bogosyan
First and second floors, Fresno City Hall; 2600 Fresno St.
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Nov. 30
You know City Hall, right? It’s that place downtown everyone says looks like a space ship, where the mayor never works.
Well, they hang art there each month and it’s actually a really nice space.
In November, Diana Griffin’s “Threads” shows on the second floor. On the first floor, see work from Uruguaian artist Hilda Bogosyan. This is only her third individual exhibit in the United States.
While you’re there, why not check out a council meeting or pay that parking ticket.
“Vintage Pop,” by Steve Norton
Gallery 25, downtown on the corner of Mono and Van Ness
1 to 4 p.m., Sunday Nov. 4; 1 to 4 p.m., Fridays to Sundays, through Nov. 25
Private visits are also available
(559) 264-4092, www.gallery25.com
Steve Norton’s “Vintage Pop,” is found art of sorts, taken from vintage graphics and photographs he’s collected from the early to mid-20th century.
In Norton’s words (from his Web site):
“There’s something very Dada about making art with found objects — love that feeling — though the image combinations and juxtapositions I create are perhaps more loaded than one of Duchamp’s readymades (sometimes a snow shovel is just a snow shovel). Though this series is firmly rooted in the traditions of Surrealism, Dada, and Assemblage, yet two-dimensional, the images are strangely contemporary. Perhaps this is due to the high tech construction and fabrication of the imagery (all digital, inkjet on canvas) in combination with the conceptual and visual content of each piece.”
So, there you have it.
“5th Annual Nudes in November”
Chris M. Sorensen Studio
2223 S. Van Ness Ave.
9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, through Nov. 30
(559) 237-4934
A juried and judged show featuring nude artwork. We’ll abstain from making a “nude” joke if you'll just go see the show.
Disclosures:We're a little too wrecked from Halloween to deal with adding links. Maybe tomorrow.

Walfred Rodriguez
I'm interested in finding out more about Mexican artist Walfred Rodriguez. I've seen a painting of his at Galeria Lamanai at Akumal Beach, Quintana Roo, Mexico that was most wonderful. I would like to purchase one of his paintings. I have a photograph of the particular painting I loved but was too large for me to take back to the states. Any info would be appreciated. Karen
Polly Penquin and Linda Lloyd Pitts,Winter 2007
Polly Penquin is moving around Fresno and she has the artist Linda Lloyd Pitts with her. Polly was last seen at Margaret Hudsons gallery in July 2007, in 111 degree heat so she had retreated for a bit and then disappeared!! This weather was definately not for penquins!
While waiting for her return Linda worked with three cancer surviors and created a piece of art representing their journey through cancer. This lovely work was displayed (and still is) at the Oncology Center along with the work of 16 more artists and about 50 more survivors. This is a permanent display, be sure not to miss it!
Returning from the north pole Polly ventured out cautiously again and scouted out two new places and urged Linda to put her work up on their walls. The Diamond Brokers at Marks and Herndon is now showing 'A Touch of Gold' , featuring Linda's gold paintings. Polly kept moving and also waddled out to the Aseracare Hospice at 650 West Alluvial. The walls were bare so she had Linda put in some of her work for their Grand Opening.
Polly Penquin is now talking with Maria Contrares about her new place so this will be continued when there is more news...
