So, Fresno Unified Superintendent Michael Hanson's salary just got bumped by 35%. That puts him at $277,000 a year. Sweetness for him, right?
Maybe that's the going price for a good superintendent, but it's hard to swallow when he's making ... what? ... five times what teachers make.
good old boys........... his
good old boys........... his father was also a superintendent of a small school district.
Clovis vs Fresno
So what if the Clovis Superintendent makes more? Clovis can afford it and has plenty of financial resources. Fresno is severely in need of financial assistance. There are just TOO MANY KIDS in the district for the resources that Fresno has. They need more teachers, more facilities, more supplies...not a superintendent whose $70,000 raise could pay for 2 brand new teachers' salaries for a whole year! That is a total disservice to the students under him! It seems he cares more about his wallet than education...
Who cares what other Districts pay?
Hanson was hired under a contract to do a job at a certain pay rate.
The School Board stabed the taxpayers in the back.
That will be remembered at election time.
Does Fresno Unified really need him?
You Have a Superintendent.
Then there is an Assistant Superintendent
The you have High Scool Superintendents and their assistants.
The Middle School ones and assistants.
Then Elementary School ones and assistants.
It's a bloated Good Old Boy's club where they give each other fat jobs and raises.
It's time for a State takeover.
Clovis Unified's
Clovis Unified's Superintendent makes $215,000 per year plus benefits. Thats a district with only 37,000 students vs the 73,000 students in Fresno. Hanson was making less than that until this raise.
Or the more interesting,
Or the more interesting, WHERE do most of those people work....
How long of a list would it
How long of a list would it be?
Everyone in Fresno making over $250,000 a year.
clarification
i just want to be clear that i didn't think he was using his san diego trip as a bargaining chip. just what i saw, in the bee i think. i do believe that he is looking to stay here, and hope that the school district continues to improve.
honestly, i'm glad that he's being paid well, because that could be the incentive to keep a good superintendent for the time it will take to fix the problems in fresno unified. this isn't to say that fresno is all bad, but we'd be lying if we said fresno unified was ship shape.
The total is more then 35%
It was back dated to the first day on the job and what about the increase in benifits.
So others get paid more in other districts.
He was hired to do the job at a certain rate.
Also how could he claim publicly there was no money for teachers?
But this is typical of the "Good Old Boys" in FUSD.
The board wil have to answer to the voters.
Shame on them.
Bargaining Chip
I read Hanson's wife has family in San Diego, and, he was there for a conference, so it is hard to say if he was using it as a bargaining chip. The pay increase is very large but it cannot be an easy job or there would be more candidates when these positions come up.
Anybody know what other superintendents are getting around the state?
hanson's sweet nectar
hanson is a really good superintendent. before he came, the district was way in debt, and the state was considering coming in and taking over. not good times. now, the budget is better, scores are up, the district seems to have turned around a bit.
but, having said that, 35%?!? that is a huge increase. really, that's 70k more. and, as the district has battled with the teacher's association, they have claimed to not have the money for raises. it took a near strike to get little more than a cost of living increase. so, to me, the percentage of his raise seems a bit much.
but, the salary amount doesn't really bother me. i don't know what other superintendents make. and, hanson is the superintendent of the 5th largest district in the state, in the most populous state. he is captain of a huge ship. so, maybe the salary is on par. last year, he made 205k. was that amount obscene to people? the article also mentions that the cfo's salary was increased to 195k, an 11% raise. should his raise been in that range?
what did somewhat bother me was the speculation that he was possibly looking @ a job in san diego, or that he was hanging that out there as a contract bargaining chip. i just don't understand these guys that are always looking for the next job jump. to his credit, he's denied that, and says he wants to retire from here.
