maybe portland isn't so hip

so, numerous artsy types from fresno have fled, errr, relocated to portland. i wish them all the best in their endeavors.

but, the grass isn't always greener. you see, the portland pd thinks a camera may be a weapon (2nd link has video). and, if you videotape the police illegally searching your neighbor's property, they may tase you. that's right, if you videotape the police on private property, you may be: a.) shot with bean bag gun; b.) tasered; c.) charged with disorderly conduct; and d.) criminal trespass. trespass? according to the story, it seems like he was a friend's property (which more or less implies permission doesn't it?). it was the police there without permission.

that's not fun. or hip.

I think the Portland point is...

To the original post...Yes, this sort of thing happens with asshole cops in every city, not just Portland.

BUT, a long time Fresnan knows that if this video would have happened to come out of Fresno, the Frisco and Portland bloggers would have jumped all over this and pointed Fresno out.

And no doubt coming up with the ever so tired and unoriginal line: "Welcome to Fresno."

Staph Epidemic in Fresno Too (for reals)

Recent article in Fresno Bee about Police and Fire employees asking that staph be considered on the job hazard, otherwise their health insurace does not cover it. It has become an epidemic in Fresno, those who are public servants are constantly in harms way of getting infections.

I was recently struck with a staph infection. It's been a very difficult health situation to experience. It's been horrific actually. At one point it was close to my brain and it could have killed me. The first round of antibiotics didn't even work. It only made the infection stronger. The next round of antibiotics helped but in the process it also wipes out all of the good bacteria, the kind you need to help digest food and maintain proper pH in your body. Prescription medication side effects can almost be worse than the thing they are trying to treat.

There are some preventive measures that can help. Use a good antibacterial soap, like dial. Disinfectant spray has become a staple in my home. Use caution while using any public facilities, shower at the gym with flip flops and for god's sake never sit down on a public toilet so your bare skin touches the lid. I carry antibacteria stuff with me everywhere now. Better be safe than catch cooties. This stuff is very contagious.

But Fresno beware, we got the cooties too. My doctor says it is an epidemic here and that they are seeing more and more cases of it.

erm, yeah, why you guys are busy poking each other...

ran across something a bit on the 'uh-oh,' side.

MRSA has been active in Portland.
(That Staph infection that killed a highschool kid back east in like, a week.)
-At present not curable.

It's not just lurking in hospitals and old-folks homes anymore apparently.

(...don't worry, I'm not picking on Portland, -turns out it's in S.F. as well, ---which means it's elsewhere, -most newsworthy cases were back east.)

-apparently it's something spreadable by the those of the athletic persuasion, too...

take some time, perhaps a sedative for those who have difficulty reading indepth material, and read the articles... it's a bit of an eye opener.

(...afterwards the whooshing sound will be everybody tearing to the local laundromat washing their 'good luck, don't wash until we make the finals,' socks and shorts...)

This could be serious.

your senses deceive you

"i sense a hint of the green eyed monster in your comment about the recent pilgrimage of fresno creatives to the new promised land of portland."

not at all. i chose to stay in fresno at another point in life. those that don't, that's their choice. i don't wish them any ill will. in fact, i hope they succeed wherever they go. that way, people know that good, talent people come from fresno. and, those of us that don't leave, and help make this place better, can show that good, talented people can make it in fresno.

i just wanted to give a subtle dig @ the new, west coast creative mecca. call it a friendly poke.

ain't getting any greener

i just visited portland and the grass is greener there. Literally, the landscape is greener, no doubt about it.

i sense a hint of the green eyed monster in your comment about the recent pilgrimage of fresno creatives to the new promised land of portland.

have ya'll been to broadway since the migration. last artHOP i realized how much fresno lost when i was cruising through the cubicles. it had this very business blender vibe, suits and ties as far as the eye could see, the 9 to 5 crew had an art project showing. it was like i was stuck in a creative vaccuum, corporate america had decided to co-opt the art scene. like all of a sudden it's the new bourgie hip thing to be down with the bohemian prolos. the cool kids were trying to pull off dorky but had to make dorky cool.

the only room with actual art in it was empty except for me and one of the arcHOPers. it was one of the big rooms where ramiro martinez was showing new work. the arcHOPer stated the obvious, "this room is empty". and then the arcHOPer even had the nerve to ask, "do you know why this room is empty"...and i chime back with truth, "this is the only room to be in", "ramiro is a great artist, you should check out his stuff". "all those folks out there are missing out, consider yourself lucky"...DUH

what next a dress code... policy handbook.... a time clock....staff meetings...???? guess i must have missed the broadway company memo about the mandatory voluntary strategic planning team building retreat where all the changes would be discussed, hostile corporate take over disguised as a creative merger gone array, i hear they had a great keynote, and everybody got matching polo shirts with the new company logo

i can't believe that is Fresno's "cultural arts district",......nah, DUDE that was downsized and shipped to Portland....whatever
