Smog City Roller Grrls, Fresno's own roller derby league, is looking for new recruits for this incredible sport. We're looking for grrls who are looking to better themselves athletically through a sport that is just as fun as it is physical. Derby has been a life changing experience for me, I never played sports in school. In fact, I was the girl who hung back in PE and only ran the mile when the teacher was looking, or faked sick to get out of push ups. I had no clue that I could become a competitive athlete, but SCRG has allowed me to grow into one. Additionally, as a new mother I don't get a lot of time for myself. Roller derby has become my beacon of light when sometimes, as wonderful as motherhood is, it looks like an endless tunnel of spit-up, gray-brown diapers and earsplitting shrieks.
And it feels friggin great to slamabitch down when she gets in your way.
Will you join up? I urge you to consider this proposal. I come to you as a rollergrrl who would love to see her team and sport grow here in the valley. You can be part of a sport that is nationally gaining recognition and you can support something home grown. Folks she's not kidding. As a skater since the inception of rollerderby in Fresno, i have to say, its more than skating, falling and taking girls down with you. We have THE greatest group of women on our team. Women who are down to earth, passionate, dedicated and not afraid of falling flat on their faces, getting up just to get knocked down again!
But more than that, we are engaged in a sport that takes determination, drive, ambition, lots of stamina and a commitment to sisterhood but more importantly a commitment to FRESNO!
We just loves us some Fresno! Really, its why we do this. We travel across Cali and this summer we've been invited to Nevada to battle it out with the Battle Born Derby Grrls in Reno! We REPRESENT FRESNO!!! This is serious stuff for us folks!

Tell them to join us on the track. If they can make it past the first month, they are bonafide DERBY GRRLS!!! We are always looking for FRESH MEAT and refs. The requirements are simple: Good attitude, availability and eagerness to learn. Yup, notice i left out, "ability to skate"? Because the truth is, that is easily learned. The hard part is walking away. We are a stubborn and loyal bunch and if we get you close, we dont let you go without a fight!
Show up to one of our practices at Cary Park behind Fashion Fair on a Monday or Thursday at 7pm and watch what we can do. I'm positive, you'll wanna throw on some skates, don your favorite pair of bobby sox and dont forget the mouthguard! Gotta keep them pearly whites in tact. Besides, bear crawls are a bitch if you break the cardinal rule!!!
