The Clovis Police Department will hold a sobriety/driver license checkpoint Saturday night (10/27) into Sunday morning. It’s part of the Department’s on-going effort to get drunk drivers and unlicensed drivers off the road through a new $424,000.00, two-year Office of Traffic Safety/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant. It’s called a “STEP” or Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant. The funding will allow the Clovis Police Department to conduct 28 checkpoints, 24 red light running details, 24 speed enforcement operations, and 13 DUI saturation patrols. The grant also provides equipment, including a motorcycle and radars, and specialized officer training
This weekend’s checkpoint will be in operation from 8:00 p.m. Saturday until 3:00 a.m. Sunday. In addition, officers will be on heightened alert for drivers under the influence in other areas of the city.
Officers will be looking not only for drunk or unlicensed drivers, but also for those with open containers in their vehicles, those who are under the influence of drugs, and those who are committing other serious criminal violations.
Funding for this STEP enforcement detail is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
