The Collegian needs to stop asking questions

Note to The Collegian: Quit talking to students. You're making your school look dumb.

Case in point, this video, where not a damn person (OK, one person) knows that Fresno State has a radio station.

It's right there on campus, people. In the Speech Arts Building. There's a big radio tower ... any of this ringing a bell?

radio is dead

students at state are to busy to notice and in the age of the ipod, iphone, notebook, bluetooth, internets, HD digital, TV, Satellite Radios, video games and all the electronic entertainments that are out there broadcast radio will be as popular as reading real news print on news papers.

The current KFSR has lost or forgotten it's "Collage Radio" edge that it used to have in the 1980s and early 1990s. KFSR used to be known and seen even from the local High Schools, it turned the youth of Fresno on to many cutting edge styles of music... What station played the hip 1980s bands before mainstream radio played them in this area it was KFSR... your Progressive Alternative!

Things have changed...

Things have sure changed since I was a Collegian editor.

Back then, the Collegian office was about 20 steps from the KFSR studio and not just another journalism class. It was a student-run, Monday-Friday independent. And KFSR was a college radio station with actual programming for students, by students. Heck, we all hung out together and some of us still do.

This is not to knock KFSR; I listen to it from time to time. But it's not what's considered "college radio" in the usual sense of the term. It's not to knock the Collegian, either. It's changed, too.

I'll leave it to others to decide if either, or neither, was better way back when.

The says a lot for the Tower Districtonians

is that really a good name for those that live there?

you missed "stone", the correct expression is; "stepping-stone", as in:

Give em' a break

As a staff member of The Collegian, I wonder if it's occurred to anyone that Fresno State's newspaper is a class as well as a publication. I'm not offering an excuse, I'm just saying that the purpose of The Collegian is largely educational. Besides, Web speak is online. It doesn't require paper.

However, on behalf of The Collegian, I'd like to thank all the students and staff at Fresno State for supporting the paper, whether they appreciate us or not. I can't speak for the rest of the staff, but I, for one, am doing the best I can to uphold journalistic principles and appeal the audience that actually reads the paper. But don't forget, I'm still a student and The Collegian is an indispensable stepping to many on their way to professional career.

The biggest

disconnect is Fresno not having pride for it's own subcultures and/or recognizing them as such. Instead, as with downtown, it seems to resent it/them.

Chico

now that is a college town.

So Fresno is not. This is AG country, and is treading some kind of line on turning into something big city-ish.

As for the disconnect. I think the noted disconnection is only one of many and touches the tip of an iceberg.

What has a tight grasp here is Fast Food Culture and Big Name Merchandising to a consumer driven social structure.

Tower District represents the the edge of a real Fresculture wanting to take a strong root, mature and propagate.

The rest of this city is like a cookie cutter tract home style of city. Strip Mall/Park it, drop a box, dispense, consume, repeat.

Nothing wrong with any of that either. But I believe the Tower District is part of what most other major cities represent in the development of a big city culture. Where people with not so mainstream popular interests get to form groups because the population is actually big enough that there are actually enough people with those same not so popular interests.

The best part is that during this official recession, the Tower District does not seem to be falling victim to it the way the rest of the city is. The says a lot for the Tower Districtonians and the people that frequent the area. They don't buy into Commercialism, they buy Fresno. That's clearly a generalization, but look at the area.

how do you answer that?

college town? i'd say no. when i think college town, i think of places the ebb and flow solely around the college. like, the size of the city is dramatically increased when college is in session.

I was mostly being snarky.

I realize The Collegian is just the messenger. My point was/is the total disconnect between the students and campus and the city's larger cultural scope.

Case in point: This band from New York was passing through this weekend and while we chatted some one of them asked, "This is a college town, right?"

How do you answer that?

Doesn't say much about serving the campus or its students. I think KFSR gave up on trying to do that many years ago. I’m sure it was like beating your head into the wall. During my many years as a student it was clear the majority of other students don't support or want things like that at Fresno State.

I DID notice the only one who had listened was a Graphic Designer. Hmm.

Furthermore, has anyone noticed that the Collegian is one of the worst things in print? I can’t believe they kill trees for that “publication.”

enjoyable mini-rant

hahaha this is hilarious.
I am one half of the team that goes out every Monday at noon to ask questions of students for The Collegian. We choose different locations every time and the goal is to get 7 people who even stop to talk to us. From our video it goes through the Opinion editor and then a multimedia editor. These students are willing to put on the microphone, tell us who they are, and answer the random question of the week. WE don't purposly make students look unintelligent. If they come of that way, well that's the way it goes. We actually stood outside the Speech Arts when we asked the KFSR question.

So "dingbats?" Uncalled for.
But the best is yet to come.

Collegian makes students dumb

I like how its implied that The Collegian is the one making students look dumb. They don't force the students to come up with their answers. These are honest answers from students. Maybe the students should get out more before they speak.

Famous Guest's picture

let me throw this out there

maybe if they played more music students listened to...other than those that listen to jazz.

i understand kfsr's strategy, but i'm not sure how many students it draws in.

so, maybe it's a very good question because it demonstrates that the radio station is out of touch with a large number of students.

So noted and changed.

See what happens when you call people dumb.

????

Where am I when they are asking these questions?
HELLO COLLEGIAN!!!?? Come find me; I have intelligent answers.
I'm typically studying somewhere around McKee Fisk or Social Science.
These dingbats just make us look stupid.
