Fresno might finally have the mid-sized venue it lost when the Wilson Theater sold to Cornerstone Church.
Being at the Crest Theatre last night for the Lamb of God show, I was reminded of the Wilson in the mid 1990s, when good bands were stopping in on a monthly basis.
The place has some issues, like the almost non-existent mens room (three toilets, really?) and a weird set up for those who like to drink beer. And it's not quite as big as the Wilson was. But seeing all the band buses lined up along Fresno street and a crowd of fans wrapping around the building was cool. Plus, the place is beautiful inside with an intricate glowing ceiling and sidewalls and the sound ain't bad at all (or wasn't this time around anyway).
Some quick notes (it was a metal show, so there's some language here. Reader beware):
To the promoters, this is a theater. It has a marquis. Use it. Having the bands names in lights goes a long way to classing up a joint.
To the sound crew, I know there is a certain decibel level required for metal shows to keep their street cred. And I realize each band has to get incrementally louder as the evening progresses (is that an Ego thing?). But there is a fine line between awesomely loud and crap-my-ears-hurt-everything-is-muddled-I-wish-I'd-remembered-earplugs loud. Lamb of God was toeing that line.
To the bands, while there is merit to creating an emotional connection with your audience, you don't need to insert our city's name every time there is a break in the music. We know we're in Fresno. We also know we're a bunch of wild-ass, crazy metal-head motherfuckers, too.
To the shirtless dude thrashing around in front of us: Start your own band. Seriously. Find a buddy who can shred on guitar, put an ad for a drummer/bassist up at Guitar Center and do it. If you can come across with half the energy you had singing along to Lamb of God last night, you'll be a hit.
Really good to see....
That Fresno PD and the Mayor are on the "Same Page" about making the downtown area a place people WANT to come to.
I think I speak for many when I say (even with ZERO criminal backround) I am more afraid of Fresno PD than I am any of the downtown "crazies"...
But obviously this is for a different blog....
"To the shirtless dude
"To the shirtless dude thrashing around in front of us" Now that is funny. You're a very entertaining writer! On a serious note, my sister loves these guys, but I just can't seem to get into them. I love U2, though! u2 concerts

The police?
The police you say? I caught the aftermath, I think, which was essentially a guy on a stretcher being hauled away in an ambulance. But it didn't seem like he was going of his own free will. But if the police did anything crazy, I missed it.
I was there too.
This was my third concert I've seen at the Crest Theater, (the other two being Five Finger Death Punch and Trivium), and I have to say I agree with Famous Whitewater about the decibel level. It was FAR TOO LOUD. I like metal, and I like loud metal, but Crest needs to tone it down a bit. My ears are still HURTING and the concert was three days ago.
The venue is very cool, has a nice underground feel, and gets good acts. I know they recently had The Used play, and back in December they had Kottonmouth Kings and hed(PE).
Did anyone else witness the police brutality that occurred outside while waiting in line? A couple of Fresno Police cuffed a guy and THEN start punching and elbowing him in the face. They mased him too. Really disturbing.
Uhmm....
Probably the last, I'd hope.
"my cross to bare"? is that a Freudian slip? ...
...is that a Freudian slip? or an underlying anti-Christian thought pattern, or just a misspelling?

Thanks, Ed
I am not Jarah. It is my cross to bare.
my thoughts. and maybe only my thoughts.
my first urge: write insulting comment.
my second urge: remind people that they are allowed to contribute to the site, to write posts, to add to the calendar.
i'll go with the second urge.
let's all remember that this is a community website, even if the bee overlords pay the hosting fees. we are all able to add posts about upcoming events, to add events to the calendar, and to write reviews after the fact.
this concert review is about the event and the venue, and it's a review. had famous whitewater wanted to write a blog about an upcoming event he could (and does).
if antimusic wants to write posts every thursday about what is cool and happening each weekend, he should.
famous whitewater, thanks for a good review of the show. i'm curious about how the crest is shaping up as a possible midsize venue for bigger acts to stop in at. i hope each of the parties involved read your advice and take them under consideration.
failed
once again you are reporting after the fact... you need to use this place to promote what there is to do before it happens, that was the beauty of this place before the bee got it, Fresno Famous would tell you about events before with the 'Thank God It's Fresno' weekly posts on Thursday. We really don’t need reviews after the show the Bee does a great job at reporting events after they happen, more than telling or reminding people about them before they happen.
pictures of inside the crest theater?
I've never been in there and I'm curious to know.
As for the concert, it sounds kinda scary :)
