Update: Here's the audio from that mentioned show, because KMJ is good like that.
KMJ's, Chris Daniel did a pretty good job of trash talking downtown last night. OK, he had some help from callers.
Daniel's question for the callers was: Now that Forest City is out, is it time to say, "enough is enough," and give up on downtown revitalization. From what I heard (and I didn't listen to the whole show) he got the typical response. Downtown is dirty and scary and has nothing to offer and who wants to deal with the homeless hitting you up for change.
I'd like to offer this to Daniel and his listeners.
* Mike Oz' take on Forest City's departure.
* A Joan Obra post about downtown eats. Pretty impressive for these economic times?
* My own story on a new local business.
* The Downtown Association Web Site.
* Some viable projects from a local developer.
* A podcast interview with Craig Scharton about why downtown is important and how it can best be revitalized.
Ray Appleton rocks too
Current KMJ conservative commentator Ray Appleton was the Program Director for the legendary progressive rock radio station KFIG-FM in the 70's. They were the hippest station of all. KFIG played all of the stuff you could not hear on the "commercial" stations like KYNO-AM. I think they played the entire "Darkside of the Moon" album in one pass without commercials.
Rock and roll knows no ideology. I disagree with Ray Appleton's politics but I would trust his musical judgment anytime. He is incredibly knowledgeable. The KFIG of the 70's was truly brilliant, every other rock station just tried to catch up.
At the time, downtown Fresno had lost its last movie theatre and blight was settling in. The KFIG studio was on a midddle floor of the Del Webb building.
Famous Whitewater, this link don't work, plz fix

welcome to the future
Did you say Chris Daniels...
Did you say Chris Daniels...of KRZR and Jennifer Lipp fame? Who would have thunk it...former rock station morning show host turns conservative pundit.
Why should I care what he has to say? He is just another one of those folks spreading the gossip of north-side developers that downtown is scary. Clearly he is not interested in being a productive voice in addressing what ails downtown.
Of course, I always find it refreshing to listen to someone complain about downtown when they never go there. It wasn't like Daniels was promoting downtown when Forrest City was still looking for grant money to stay a float.
Let us hope that KMJ doesn't force Daniels to work on location downtown.
list
4. you are not able to differentiate between private security @ riverpark and the duties of fresno police officers
Let's start a list.
You can't trash talk downtown if:
1.) You haven't been there in 25 years
2.) You have bad feelings toward colored/poor people
3.) You confuse it with the Tower
Help me out, here ...
shocking! daniel is scared of downtown
daniel does some good by actually using the mayor's comments on the need for infrastructure. i had a recent conversation with a downtown developer (linked above by famous) and he was talking about how there is very limited water available, and that his developments will already be using most of it. he personally has had to fix things (sewer, gutter, street) that the city should have maintained over the last few decades. so, i'm encouraged that the mayor at least acknowledges the need to invest in our downtown infrastructure if it's going to be revitalized.
he's never heard of the downtown triangle? i guess i shouldn't be surprised. a guy that claims to talk knowledgeably about fresno isn't familiar with the established term for the downtown area. just to help the guy out, look @ a map of the downtown area. you'll see this big triangle made up by freeways. hmmm, i wonder where they got that term?
what i hear from daniel is the easy, all or nothing approach. working on the high speed rail station, that won't revitalize all of downtown. nothing has happened in twenty years. nevermind all of the small projects that have gone in and are working to revitalize, which is a slow process and not something that just happens with a silver bullet over night. ignore everything that is happening downtown, all the new construction, the new "named" buildings. these things haven't completely done it yet so they must not be doing it. ignore the facts, and contradict with opinion rather than actual data.
the other thing i hear is inflammatory language. ramshackle buildings. businesses that are going to fail. why bother. blighted. i don't think i care anymore. circling the drain. urine covered dead guy.
btw, i love the seeming contradictions of conservative radio. dude talks about waxing and other wholesome topics. he also comes back from a break bumping rage against the machine. wait, rage? a band that wholeheartedly disagrees with everything that station stands for? i mean, he started the show ranting about pelosi and immigration and then is bumping rage, guys that openly disagree with the u.s. policy on immigration.
i also love that joe moore clowned daniel on the advertising for hero's grand opening. yeah, your station. the biggest antenna in the valley pumped out ads for it. but downtown owners aren't advertising.
They have the Big Megaphone
FF has a few hundred readers, maybe a thousand. KMJ is the top rated radio station in the market. It has more than a million potential listeners and hundreds of thousands of actual listeners. Chris Daniel and the other local Limbaugh dittoheads have been trashing the downtown for decades. They are part of the reason it is in this condition.
Ask them how they feel about the Tower District sometime.
They fear anyone who is not like them and they are the majority in this county. All of my life I've witnessed people whispering racial, ethnic and homophobic slurs as if it makes it okay because they are whispering. If it weren't for the fact that some their grandchildren are blended I would lose hope.
Evening radio
So wait, there is enough people listening to his show that he has callers? Who knew. KMJ can throw any old crap on the air and people will listen.

Now this is a great story.
Now this is a great story. So many different angles. Reps-Dems, conservative talk-liberal talk, north-south, rich-poor,
bigot-open minded, national-local, kmj-the rest of us, etc.
