I've been asked to add contact info from my phone list to the FCASH Music Directory. Does anybody else want to be listed?
answer this and I'll paste you in.

Steve's original post for this list of bands that was to be compiled by FCASH was on FEB 2nd, 3 weeks ago and only 5 bands have actually responded here. We're not going to make any head way
here. It has to be compiled and published by someone who actually has access to that info. Someone who works with all the musicians and venues in town. Or someone who knows how to get that information. An aggregator or compiler could develop such a list with access to the raw data.

It would be nice to know exactly how many gigging musical acts there are in Fresno. Band name, style of music, contact number, etc. Also a complete list of venues that have live music would be nice as well. How about a list of promoters/booking agents, too? All in an alphabetical list.
Years ago the Musicians Union probably would have such info. But, they're gone, aren't they? I see ads for companies like Gigmasters and such: You pay them - they get you gigs. Maybe that's who the Musicians Union morphed into. I'm kind of old fashioned, I like to book my own gigs, no pay to play. But, it's tough when you don't have that name recognition and a dependable following.
It's my opinion that 80% of the gigging bands in Fresno have no following. In other words, whenever they play they cannot depend on 50 people showing up. If there is an audience already there that's different. But, to be able draw your own audience of at least 50 people to any location, that's the most rewarding thing about working as a musician.
I was hoping folks would respond to this more. I will do as much research as I can to make a complete list. I am looking for information from all of you, the general music and entertainment community. I know a lot of people but I don't know everybody. There are specific style fan communities in Fresno that follow Ska, Heavy Metal, Folk, Jazz, Flamenco and other styles. I am collecting web and myspace addresses more than phone numbers and names. Even a list of myspace links would be welcome.
Fresnoise, I agree that most Fresno bands don't draw as well as they should. There are several factors. The act has to have something special to offer the audience. A generic sounding band playing loosely is not going to draw as many eyes and ears as a hot polished talent with tight backup. The successful acts promote and communicate better with their fans and book and promote gigs months in advance. (I've been guilty of all of the above) If there is a reliable way to promote a quick gig I'd love to know about it.
Entertainment is a luxury item in this town at this time and many people don't take our own talent seriously. Big time acts can draw thousands into the Save Mart Center while local acts have problems drawing a few hundred. Things are tough.
Mike Oz at the Fresno Bee has made things much better. He and the Fresnan and Fresno Famous and the other Bloggers of the Local Scene have done a great deal to expose and promote local talent. God Bless the web.
Local cultural arts aren't usually marketed as much as they are lived. Our local "Gumbo" has been cooking slow. For decades our local ethnic communities have had their cultural festivals. Their children have gone to local schools and grown up with American pop/rock/country/jazz. Local bars, taverns, coffeehouses and cafes along with local cultural groups and leaders have been and are holding potlucks, jam sessions and open mikes to help these homegrown artists develop.
This stew of multiethnic and popular cultures is driving the music scene of Fresno.
My work last year with Patrick Contreras and the American Gypsy Experience was some of the most fun I've ever had. We fused rock with folk, native American, flamenco, Brazilian samba, middle-eastern, irish, blues, jazz and funk. The ethnic background of the band members was just as diverse and they had no problems playing each other's music.
At an FCASH meeting a couple of months ago the executive director Cynthia Cooper and I discussed the "Fresno Sound". Both of us are hearing "it". I proposed a non profit Fresno Folklore Society record label to record and promote local acoustic music. We are working on a business plan. I'd love to see a co-op of independant local labels form up to record, produce, and market the entire "Fresno Sound" to the world. I believe we are ripe.
You might want to think you are "Underground" but that shouldn't mean invisable. Promote your stuff.
A few weeks back I was out in Clovis when I heard a very white young woman's cell phone start to ring to the tune of "Hey Baby Que Paso?". I knew it was all over then.

That is so cool your doing this, Steve. Just knowing who the people are who do the booking at the venues in town can seem like an insider secret. It's my opinion that only a small percentage of the gigging bands in Fresno actually have a draw. Do you concur?
Yes there is. I am going to do some research of the web about y'all using Mike Oz's stuff at the beehive, "7" listings and mentions and myspace. Any other venue or artist or service info is welcome.

Since I have only gotten responses from a few musical artists (smart folks these) I am going to assume that most Famous Fresnans don't understand the opportunity this represents.

The Music Directory that was handed to me was from the 20th century. Let's get it up to date.
Being in the FCASH Music Directory could be like hanging out a sign and announcing that you are open for business. It is a public document available to all nonprofit and govenmental agencies, as well as the general public and show promoters.
I want to encourage all musical artists and acts to join the FCASH Music Directory. This is not some web scam. This is a legit nonprofit agency whose mission is to help us prosper.
