Free(dumb) of the press

Has anyone been following the arrests of several journalists during the DNC and RNC conventions?
First, there was news of an ABC reporter being arrested in Denver, last week. This week, columnist Amy Goodman was arrested in St. Paul.
My thoughts:
* This brings up a whole slew of questions about the role (and danger) of the citizen journalist. If this is a question of free press, and corporate media can be targeted, then what chance does Joe Blogger have?
* It also raises a larger question about freedom and access as it relates to our politcal system. While the police have every right, and in fact a duty, to protect these conventions, incidents like this do little to promote the ideals of the freedoms of the press, speech, essembly, etc.

I am very curious what it is that leaves you folks so concerned about journalist, while failing to mention the hundreds of other people arrested at these conventions and charged with various rediculous crimes. Even a quick and lazy online search will turn up dozens of videos and stories of the police state at the RNC AND DNC making rediculous arrests. Pay attention closer and you will see this happens every day all accross america. Its Naive to say it didnt happen at the DNC or to act like this is a convention specific or Journalist only concern. Wake up and smell the tear gas, you live in a police state and you have everything to fear, and before you go verbaly attacking all those "rioting, lawbreaking, window shattering, anarchists" that im sure you blame for the mess, remember that exactly that type of behavior is EXACTLY what this "free" country, and "democracy" (HA!) was built with. And that those people are fighting for YOU and for those without voices. ask yourself how many starving people in how many exploited countries (exploited for your benifit, u better believe it) could have been fed AND educated with the money spent on the police rioting against citizens at those conventions, not to mention the conventions themselves.
Amy
I'd sure like to see the previous 2 minutes of that tape. From what I saw, it appeared that the cops overreacted by arresting Ms Goodman. But she may have contributed to her arrest in ways that we don't see. Failing to obey a police officer's lawful order is grounds for arrest. Unless there are justifiable grounds for doing so, preventing a journalist from reporting is not a lawful order. I have been listening to Ms Goodman for long enough to know she understands her rights as a journalist far better than the cops do. I also know that she likes stirring up trouble. Did she overstep her role as an investigatory journalist?
No comparison
Same thing happened at the 2004 RNC in NY. The Republicans need a police-state for their own safety - a sign of the times. To compare protests at the DNC to the RNC is preposterous. Denver had a great time with their guests and I'm sure Mpls/St.Paul is saying, "don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya".
Another soul who did not get there parents attention:Amy Goodm
Who in the hell is Amy Goodman..Other than someone who needs a bail bondsman.
If she is from Fresno, she couldn't smash a window at a Starbucks in North Fresno.
Amy, should i call mama?
Amy Goodman getting arrested at the RNC:
She looked like she was crying. I felt sorry for her. If she was harmed in some way she could
probably get competent counsel seeing how she's so famous.
But, it does give her some street-cred.
She was on FSTV just a few hours later discussing it all.
The protesters seem a lot more angry and aggressive in St. Paul than they were in Denver. I didn't see any tear gas in Denver.
true that
this is some of the reason why i really hoped copwatch would get off the ground better here in fresno. we have fewer and fewer rights as citizens to stand up against governmental agencies. this doesn't mean that i think we should have unlimited rights to cause mayhem, break stuff, and be general pains in the rear. but in both of those cases the police were clearly over-reacting.
(btw, famous, two posts in one day? didn't you get the memo that this site was dead?)
