After some delay , Fresh and Easy a British owned grocery chain that specializes in smaller stores, with a plethora of quality prepared foods for take out is finally breaking ground where the old Old Hofbrau was for many years : R St and Tulare Ave in Fresno's Downtown.
I was more excited yesterday then I am today because while I was happy to see the old parking lot torn up in preparation for construction today they also tore down every tree lining the streets . I am sure they will plant more but mature trees are better then young trees any day for the shade and aesthetics.
I'm so disappointed there's
I'm so disappointed there's not going to be a Fresh n Easy at that location. A semi trader joes near tower. They must've spent a fortune on that property and the building.
oh, now i see
nevermind, i found the bee story on it.
fresh & easy?
anyone know what's going on with this. i know it was alluded to in the latest flowing with famous, and the debunking of one myth, but i haven't actually heard if anyone knows reality.
(diablo makes moves by name dropping FLW... ooooh)
...not a hijack, ---just a spectacular reference that not a lot of folks are going to know about...
(Frank Lloyd Wright.)
I had a chance to work on one of his houses back east (Princeton area,) we redid the hardwood floors in a place of his...
--a few things I remember:
--The house had definite issues with the massive amount of light/heat-cold coming in from the windows and window encasements (the design was there, the tech was not,
and a lot of thse things were retaining water/leaking and had moisture build up (which also warped the floors.)
---and, as the whole place was done by him, the seating was 'gorgeous,' in terms of line and such, ---but were brutal in terms of comfort...
---The seating I think he'd be guilty of, to a degree, (but not so much... he did this stuff back before ergonomic stuff was really understood and widespread...)
---The problems with lighting, heat and cold issues ---well, this was way before any type of double or triple layer windows were available, and the encasements (any encasements) only last so long before they have to be replaced (besides that, the tech was just NOT there to support the design, even though the design was astonishing.)
'Falling Water,' --after all these years really has been in some jeopardy (because,) the stresses of the house over the brook is challanging the foundations (causing weakness and such,) --so they have pretty strict rules as to number of occupants and weight loading depending on where in the house you are...
But the best?
'Whats the difference between architect/designers/engineers?'
'-and the BoyScouts?'
(ans)
'the Boyscouts have adult supervision...'
(My cousin's an ironworker, did a lot of the welding on the buildings around here, -including the Spaceship, -he told me that.)
Tree roots uplifting
the concrete is poor planning, cause, trees grow you know. There's all kinds of examples of trees in concrete planters that don't have roots uplifting the concrete. I'd say the tree types and eventual growth of those trees were not properly evaluated. This shows either complete disregard for function in favor of form and/or someone had no idea what they were doing. Plants getting choked out from age and growth under concrete falls under the same umbrella to me as well. Opinion of course.
The concrete looking like crap due to normal wear and tear, regardless of upkeep, is poor planning. Again you'd think that in a mall there would be constant spilling of this or that leaving marks and residues. Not to mention the wear on the concrete that shows regardless of cleaning. I have been witness plenty of the steam pressure cleanings, chemical application and all, and the concrete still looks dingy afterwards from the wear. To me, that's poor planning. Here again this could show form before function and/or someone had no idea what they were doing. Opinion one more time.
Artists are great, but that doesn't mean they know engineering. Frank Lloyd Wright has examples of his beautiful designs of office spaces and homes....whose roofs leaked all the time because although they looked nice, they were not engineered properly.
Just saying...not wanting to hijack here...just that I hope the planning involved with that place is a lot better than what history has shown in some parts downtown. I don't like the idea of setting up a burden for our future.

I saw that too. I think
I saw that too. I think they are taking away non compacted dirt and replacing it with engineered fill. That way the structure won't sink later on.
Large Piles of Dirt
The progress today consisted of a large pit generating several huge piles of dirt as they get ready for the foundation.
Fresh and Easy ripping out trees
I also saw that the trees at the corner of Tulare & R were ripped out and at first i was surprised. But, I'm willing to lose those few trees in exchange for the investment of a cool, urban grocery store in downtown Fresno.
shaw and willow
That is already built, so it should be opening soon.
December or January
They are saying late December or early January. I heard another is going in at Shaw and Willow which may have an earlier opening.
Let me know when it opens.
Let me know when it opens.
Leo...
The mall wasn't planned poorly, it was maintained poorly, even by those that are fighting tooth and nail to protect it.
Of course this is just my opinion!
edit: there were somethings that were planned poorly, the "gazebo" in front of your store being a prime example!
I think leaving
some mature and then placing young trees next to presents a few issues. For the most part, continuity and aesthetics. So it seems it came down to having to cut them all.
Hopefully, they are planning ahead a lot better than the job they did so many years ago with the trees on the mall. Just saying...
Diablo
everytime...
sorry! double post.
everytime...
I hear the word "plethora" I think of "el guapo" in Three Amigos.
Now that you bring up the sidewalk it does look like they tore into it pretty bad, so they may be replacing it. Which wouldn't be a bad thing, it was in pretty bad shape. As were the "flower beds" that surrounded the trees.
Abe
And The Word Plethora is Chopped Liver?
Hey OOTV,
No kudos for plethora? Sorry I had to try and rhyme trees however awkwardly with Easy.
I find it hard to believe they had to chop every tree down. Some , OK, but all? Were they diseased? Are they moving the sidewalk? You have to save some eggs for a later recipe or even dying Easter eggs.
well..
Isn't there a saying "in order to bake a cake you gotta break a couple of eggs" or something like that?
I agree with Andy that it is unfortunate that the trees were cut down. But downtown needs a grocery store of this sort. The "big box" store on Fresno St. doesn't necessarily cater to the crowd that seems to be moving downtown, young professionals.
So with that in mind, the removal of the tress can be seen as an acceptable "loss" so long as they plant new tress to replace them. Albeit, younger tress.
Love it.
Love it.
der hyphenator
please...
do not make a rhyme like THAT
and then use the word aesthetics...
(ooof...)
