Hard Times

some people are making a big deal over fucking lame Starbucks closing in town and are trying to keep a store open when there is another shop just down the street.

But what is now gone from Fresno, is that there are no real Computer stores you know the one were you can get the parts to build a computer your self... I'm taking computer stores that you can buy the Processor and Motherboard separate, Cases, and all the extras you need, also where you can get a normal regular mouse and keyboard for cheap.. like under $15.

DKA closed years ago, CompuUSA left earlier this year, and PCClub shut their doors last week.

Now where in town is there a computer store comparable to DKA, CompUSA and PCClub?
Does BestBuy, CircuitCity, or an Office store have PC Motherboards and OEM products for sale? Those places only carry products that are all in the box.

I wish we had a FRYS!

I guess we are only left with mail order to get PC parts.

ComputerMania

I've come to the conclusion that computerMania, is so far the best mom and pop aka locally owned computer shop in town right now. ComputerBiz is OK but no were near ComputerMania, I like their used parts bins for $10. Their used systems to me are a little high for a used computer but if it includes a monitor then it’s an ok deal.

yes computer repair labor prices can be a little high ... I feel that a flat fee of about $80 to fully fix anything thats wrong with a home computer is a fair price, anything more and they are just ripping you off.

Fry's, CompUSA, Compubiz

That comment was made by me. I forgot to long in first;). I am not a big fan of anon comments.

Fry's, CompUSA, Compubiz

I didn't realize about Compubiz, I think I am going to have to check it out. We are always looking for a good component store. We loved Fry's when we lived in San Jose but only during the day. After hours it is always a mad house (the benefit of being a Stay at Home Wife and Geek;).

As far as CompUSA. I was really disappointed in it. When it opened I was all excited but it seemed to get pricey and pretentious. Now that it is on line, it has great deals. You can buy components and systems pretty cheap! I just got a laptop (I am anxiously waiting its delivery).

Computer Mania has new and used stuff

I have used Computer Mania next to Yoshinos on Blackstone for the past 9 years. They have alot of used laptops cheap and sell Cases Motherboards Processors and Memory seperate. Their Labor prices are a little high for me but parts are cheap IMO for a do it yourselfer.

PC Club

I just heard on the news this morning that PC Club filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and closed all of it's stores, including the one on Blackstone.

What really sucks is that apparently some of the customer's computers are still in the store and it's locked and they can't get to them.

Yeah we need a Fry's. Not another WorstBuy™ in Clovis.

eRecycle

a lot of still good computer hardware is getting junked... in those eWaste drop offs.

I remember a shop 15 years ago in Berkeley that would sell old used working computer parts.

I saved a computer monitor from being junked last year the only thing wrong with it was a bent and missing pins on the DE-15 male plug. I took another good cable with a 15 pin male plug, and spliced it in. It works. (no I'm not using DVI connector)

I've used pricewatch for many years, but some of the mail order company's listed may not be that trustworthy, do they have a guarantee?

I forgot to mention, that Egghead Software store in Fresno was located right were PCClub was in that same shitty shopping strip on the edge of shaw and Blackstone.

Has anyone noticed that TigerDirect and CompUSA are one the same now? And Amazon owns whats left of Egghead.

I still wish there was a Frys in the Fresno area.

I have always used

www.pricewatch.com. www.newegg.com is good too, but pricewatch usually lists them.

Have built at least 6 PC's, all of them 400-700 bux. Only thing I really like about a prepackage kind of deal is the matched hardware, with "fewer" conflicts.

I like to research all the hardware for best bang for the buck as well as compatibility and longevity. Usually 2 cuts below the latest top of the line is a good deal and good performance.

Nothin like talking to a real compu geek though, their info and knowledge is priceless. I usually buy ancillary stuffs from them.

Diablo

talk to Travis and Hippie at Compubiz

they're up here next to the school credit union building not far off of Fresno on Barstow.

They have a lot of stuff like that, as well as older stuff.

Tell 'em Eric Sent you... (so they'll charge you double...)

Serious
These are good guys.
