hero's sports lounge and pizza

as long as this place is open, i think will be enjoying major sporting events at this place. and, i think i'll be going here before or after (or both) fresno grizzlies and fuego games.

the food here is super nice. the decor is even better. honestly, tv's galore, great sports memorabilia, and that upstairs is super cool. i can't wait to see a band play there.

my buddy and i both had calazone's for lunch, and they were both great. i had the italian stalion and he had the classic something or other. my wife had thai chicken salad.

let me rave about the thai chicken salad i didn't have: the spinach looked hella fresh. really. crisp, fresh spinach. wait, i thought this was a sports themed pizza place? they have a fresh spinach salad with an excellent thai dressing. holy crap. and, they have like 5 other legit looking salads on the menu, and i imagine they're as good.

both our calazones were really good as well. the presentation was nice, and the flavors were excellent.

the only drawback is that it may be a bit pricey and slow for the average downtown worker for lunch. but, if you're going to dinner or don't have to quickly be back to your job after lunch this is definitely a place to go.

For starters, where do you

For starters, where do you get your information from?? Before you start running your mouth you might want to get some facts straight. Everytime I have gone to Hero's it has been nothing but professionally run by management and the owner. As for the comment about a guy that used to "RUN" City Lights... total lie!! All you sound like to me is a pissed off ex-employee! Maybe you should have done your job better so then you wouldn't have anything to complain about. Face it, you sucked so you lost your job!

DISGRUNTLED FORMER EMPLOYEES LOL

It's really funny having some inside info on facts and details regarding both the staff at Hero's (present and past) and the guests that frequent there. First of all I would like to say that I am one of those guests as well as a business associate of Hero's, and have had numerous conversations with many of the employees regarding management and staff issues. Getting rid of the trash that originally opened that place and called themselves managers was the best thing they could have ever done. Dealing with Brandy was everybody's own personal hell! Nobody looked forward to going to work or dealing with her regarding outside business issues. And the original "GM/bar manager" was the opitomy of a first class DRUNK! As far as the "new girl" Kim goes, she seems to take care of business all day long everytime I am there, she is constantly running in 10 diffrent directions and obviously has no competant support staff however, she is always pleasant and proffesional. So what if she enjoys a drink or two after work? As a salaried employee, even if you are scheduled 9-5, are you ever really "off the clock"? As far as the pole dancing, that just sounds like someone purposly trying to make it personal. Besides being completely overworked and underappreciated she is ridiculously H-O-T! Smart, personalble, and good looking, I'm sure 99% of everyone that has met her is greatly intimidated and most likely EXTREMELY jealous! So I say YOU GO GIRL! If they are spending their free time talking about you and trying to bring you down, you must be doing something right! Sounds exactly like some disgruntled former employees (managers???), if you ask me!

my recent visit

so, i went to watch the ncaa championship game last night @ hero's. there was a modest crowd there. it did take a little too long (imho) for the staff to notice i was there, and waiting for service. fortunately, i was waiting for someone anyway, and it wasn't too big a deal that they didn't immediately notice me.

what did suck was that they didn't have sound for the game. HUH? no sound? i did ask if they could turn the sound on, and they explained that currently it was broken. they had a call in to directv, and it's going to be fixed, but it still sucks to watch a live sporting event and hear satelite radio hits.

the food was good, and i like their happy hour pricing, which is like $2 off appetizers and discounted drink prices.

I've been to Hero's quite a few times now since I work downtown - both for lunch and after work for dinner and drinks - because its convenient and we really want to support downtown business. But it is difficult to want to continue to support them when the service has been consistently awful. They rarely have sufficient wait staff in the bar or the restaurant, and they are either rude or apologetic after the fact (they are obviously aware of the problems). Actually, the food is good. And I didn't find their prices to be out of bounds. But those things don't even matter when the bartender tells you incorrect prices for your drink and then argues when you ask about the bill, the waitress doesn't tell you the sizes of drinks they offer (I might have ordered a larger size if they had asked) and there is rarely wait staff assigned to the top level which would otherwise be a nice quiet place to have a business lunch - IF your drink could be refilled and you could pay your tabs without going downstairs to request that the staff come back to take care of you. One evening visit was specifically because we thought they would have a particular game on one of their TVs. Downstairs was too crowded so our group opted to eat upstairs. Not only did they not have staff assigned upstairs, but they would not turn on the televisions upstairs. But we keep trying because Hero's is conveniently located, at the very least. And I really hope to report some improvement by this summer!

Heros Managment

3

It seems like Heros is doing fine,i am a regular there and me and my co-workers eat and drink there at least 3 days a week. The service has greatly improved since the grand opening and it seems to have worked out most of its kinks. The food is great and i love the atmosphere, its nice to see that in the downtown area. The only thing that i can say that they need to improve on is the service,i have seen new managers that are there now than what they started with and it seemes to be running more effieciently,i had a complaint about a month ago and we had asked to speak to a manager and she was very rude, arrogant, and overall just didnt seem to have a whole lot of managment experience by the way she didnt handled our problem(no toilet tissue in the bathroom),i think her name was Brandy, and i believe you need to turn over managers and employees until you get the right people in place.Great job Heros!!your heading in the right direction!!

I like the place

I've been to Hero's a bunch of times and have had a good experience each time. The food is good and the staff has been helpful. I think it's a good addition to downtown and I hope it makes it.

press2901's picture

who's in charge???

Just let me say that the manager you met, Kim, has absolutely no real restaurant experience. And now they hired a guy that used to run City Lights...Now I say, REALLY! Is that the kind of stigma we want downtown. The owner wants consistency. Well, at least we know that Kim will always be drunk while working. (Oh yea! There has been other complaints of her drinking on the job) What's next pole dancing?

Great service

4

I've been here two times since it's opened. Once on a business meeting and again with a large group of friends before a concert downtown. Both times I was waited on by the same server (odd) and both times I was pleasantly surprised!
Upon hearing the complaints about service and prices, I half expected to be let down. But I love downtown and will try any new restaurant at least once!
Both times service was very friendly, quick and the food was perfectly prepared.(I'm a picky eater)
Both times the waitress was on point, knew her menu AND never let our drinks go empty.
Both times the place was packed and everyone there seemed happy.
The band was playing upstairs on my second visit and being seated in the corner at the very front of the restaurant we could hear the music like we were right in front of the band.
Yes it's a bit pricey but you pay for the ambiance as well as the food.
I think this place has something great going for them.
During happy hour on a Friday, to see a restaurant bustle the way it was made me really happy.
My only complaint? The mixed drinks were terribly weak. BUT I admit, I'm used to a Stones or Landmark cocktail so anything else just tastes like juice!

Who is really in charge in this zoo!

1

I went to dinner with some freinds at Hero's which should be zero's. It was a friday evening they where on the busy side so I did take that into consideration. 1-lets just say the hosting and wait staff are idiots. Trained monkeys could do a better job. 2-The food for the prices they charge. I'am sorry basic bar food isn't that hard to prepare but the kitchen staff managed to screw it up. Let's face it besides the fancy sports names of the food it's food that you can get anywhere else in town for less money that tastes better. 3-Let me say mgt(woman named Kim)didnt get her last name. Who recked of booze and most diffently was druck. That came to our table when we asked to see a manager was so unprofesional why she was hired or still has a job only confirms what I have heard. 4-The owner has no knowlege or experance in the resturant business and it shows from top to bottom. This guy needs to hire people that know how to run a resturant and then let them do it. Untill then this place will always be less than second rate. 5-The only good thing that I can say about the place is that it was decoratted very well. Is that enough for me to go back? No! It will take some major changes like correcting the above mentioned problems before I will go back. There are other places downtown that offer better service, better food and better prices. I dont travel downtown much so when I do those are three things I look for and Hero's does not offer them. The shame is that the potential for that place is huge. The real shame in the end the owner will be the downfall of the place over time.

Famous Guest's picture

I agree, but what do you

I agree, but what do you expect when you have a man that has never ran a restaurant before, taking a chance on managers that couldn't find their ass even if they had a map. Give it time and it will be gone just like all the others. Inconsistency is the key to their failure.

SERVICE SUCKS!!!

1

Worst place to come and ask for "decent" service more less "excellent" service. Will never come back to order take out nor come for lunch! Hire some people that actually have PEOPLE SKILLS! You know the people that are FRIENDLY, say HELLO when you walk in, SMILE, ask WHAT CAN YOU BE ASSISTED WITH, ACKNOWLEDGE the customer! Not have 4 - 5 waiters and waitress and "SO" called Hostess have a group conversation at the front and not be IGNORED! PLEASE work on this owners, and managers of HERO's cause you guys have something good, but that "CUSTOMER SERVICE" will drive your business down!

Famous Guest's picture

i think there is something

4

i think there is something to the overpriced for downtown comment. at this point, even hero's is still a very lunch-based business. many of its patrons are eating lunch out every day. even people who earn good money won't pay $15-20 every day for lunch. on the other hand, river park and champlain/perrin businesses are doing mostly a dinner crowd which is made up of people who are expecting to pay higher prices and are not going out every night. they won't blink at paying $20-25 for the same meal after 6pm.
good luck to hero's - i think they can cultivate the taking out to a business lunch crowd and continue to charge the prices they do. (and don't forget joe's across the street).
p.s. - i gave 'em a "great" for the st. stan's

Service

2

Food is great here, but the service is below average in my opinion. Went here for the first time a couple of days ago, got greeted right away and seated. However, we didn't see a waitress to take our order on drinks for about 3 minutes and then after she took our order for drinks we didn't get our drinks for about another 5 minutes! Slow on service I think. Then I ordered take out another time and the hostess that helped wasn't very much help except letting me know that next time when I order over the phone I need to go to the bar area to get my order. Not friendly whatsoever! Luckily the food kind of makes up for the service.

Over priced for downtown?

@Famous guest

I'm not sure what "overpriced for downtown," means. It's either overpriced, or it's not. Are you saying the prices would be acceptable it Heroes was in Riverpark? Are you saying only poor people live downtown and they can't afford to pat those prices? Or is that people downtown are more discerning about the value of their dollars?

Famous Whitewater's picture

river park prices?

4

dear Famous Guest on Fri, 02/20/2009 - 10:04,
wait, just because something is downtown it has to be cheap? that's silly.

as for river park prices, many of the chain restaurant in river park may be charging less. they're chains and can get by. this is a nice, local establishment that seems to be charging a fair price for their product.

Love this place

I went there few days ago and absolutely love this place. I'm definitely coming back again. This time, I am bringing my friends from out of town. Who cares if it is overcharged like River Park.

It's to over priced for Downtown

They are charging River Park prices in Downtown. It won't last long.

2nd visit

4

on my second visit, i had the personal pizza + side salad deal. the pizza is very nice. i enjoyed the sauce, and it's pretty big for a personal pizza. 3 hours later and i'm still full from the meal.

they seem to have really worked out whatever issues they had early on with slow service. it was pretty busy in there and i was seated, ordered, and ate in around 35-40 min.
