How would you make Famous even better? (suggestion box)
I like the new format--mostly.
Here's a few suggestions I'd like to make.
How about other users? What would you suggest?
One struggle I see, is finding the balance
between having as much content as possible
(that’s what makes this place interesting) and
keeping it streamlined and clear to users.
The other version was cluttered, but it kept
more subjects/conversations/events in front of
people’s eyes on the front page long enough to spark conversation
rr interest.
Here’s a couple suggestions I’d throw out to
The FresnoFamous Powers That Be…
“Sour Grapes”---this is the editors platform.
Wonderful---but should the editor’s
contributions also appear in ‘recent blogs”?
It nudges one more reader-contributed bit
off the front page.
“Popular Tags”…is this useful. Really? Does it
take up space where more stories or blogs could appear?
“Twitter”…it may be that I’m not down with the technology,
but this bit doesn’t grab me. That might just be me.
Maybe the amount of lines on the ‘recent blogs’ shown
on the front page could be limited, thus allowing more ‘headlines’
to be visible.
Once again, the more conversations and events up there in the front,
the more you might grab someone---like more fishing lines to grab more
fish, BUT, I do see the streamlined thing being important as well.
Great job Mr. Whitewater and all on the FresnoFamous staff. This is just my two cents.
Any others?

The edit buttons have been restored! It took some looking but i finally found the problem... please let me know if anybody is still having any problems with that.
oh yeah, sorry they're not styled or positioned yet, but at least they're up. I'll style them tomorrow...
thanks for pointing that out... i'm looking into it now...
Help
I dont seem to see an edit or delete button for content i've posted. I make mistakes...i know, hard to imagine. How am I able to fix them?
Hmm...it seems that my comment was moderated, but other spam from the past 24 hours hasn't been...
So I'll ask it again: was the approach to the re-desing/re-build, "Change it, and then find out what people want?" Was there any polling of members before the work began? Any user testing during the process?
Suggestions
DROP THE LOGO (for a broader, less comic-like appeal)
INVERT THE COLORS (for easier reading)
MORE IMAGES (i.e. Famous People) on the front page, perhaps to the sides of the text at center
Oh, and bring back the CATEGORIES at the bottom of the page, please.
Thank you.

I agree. the default drupal events calendar is pretty horrible. We've also noticed how annoying repeating events are, because it looks like there are some events that just repeat forever... calendar spam... stay tuned because a complete overhaul of the calendar is fairly near the top of our to do list.
I think it would be great if multiple posts in the events section would be deleted. There is one titled Healthy air living contest, that is posted close to 20 times in a row. It seems like a lot of events are posted multiple times like that. I find that rather annoying.
I have also noticed that when looking at the recent posts, where it shows the number of replies. It is not loading up properly. It is showing only part of the text.
I think the site would look better centered
- The site is designed for 800x600 screen res and it's fixed width. C'mon it's not 1999. Either give us fluid width or make it wider.
- On single pages the content is scrunched into a 420px wide box! You know how annoying it is to read stuff on here now? Your two sidebar columns do not contain a huge amount of content. You should combine them into one on the single pages and widen this content area.
- Comments are displayed in reverse chronological order, with the newest at the top. This is not the way people are used to reading comments. The newest should be at the bottom.
- Where are the forums? Where are the google maps?
- Where's the content? When you're on a single page all you have is the "Recent Posts" widget in the sidebar. No other way for us to view content. Where are the categories/sections that used to be in the top navigation?
- Links page is blank. http://www.fresnofamous.com/links
- "Soup Grapes," in the top nav, links to Jarah's old blog with outdated posts from 2007.
- Let me know if you need help with Drupal at all.

Like the user above, I get the sense that nothing of substance has changed--just the appearance (colors, logos, etc.) The same tired photos are there, the same tired text, etc. It's like all you did was change your CSS script and hired someone to draw cool anti-MAN some fists. Your trivia under the header is from some robot. I guess I was hoping for more... there there.
Suggestions:
When I go to a site like this, I would like to see a running list of recent comments and posts in one place.
I'd like to see locally, user-produced video in one place.
In another place, I'd like an organized list, or Tags if you must,(not clutter boxes) linking to things like: Food, Bands, Nightlife, Music, Art.
User generated articles with structure--top-10 lists, or some user edited wikis. I mean, I'm no techie or futurist, but it looks like nothing from the past year has been adopted except for twitter, and that's been in the past few weeks.
I'll withhold final judgment until the really cool new features arrive... but there are a lot of free tools out there for non-techs. How about a user-driven calendar? Also, I must have missed this forum, but were we ever asked what we wanted in a redesign before the black on black on gray was chosen? And why does this site only have two people? that's just crap. The girls at Fresnocentric has more people than that.
You can be so much better than this Famous! I just want what's best for the Famous community and the Famous potential. I'm so excited about it sometimes. Let's get with 2007 before the year ends, please.
ok, now the posts by famouswhitewater for his sour grapes blog will not appear under the "recent blogs" section on the front page. they will only appear under the sour grapes section, so they will not bump any other user's recently create blogs.
Dark letters on a light background is easier to read and has an ethereal feel to it. Like the letters are floating in space. And space is unlimited. Therefore the content is unlimited.
But, a dark background feels like a stone or slab of metal and the letters are etched into it implying a limited amount of space and content.
I love how Craigslist hasn't changed and is just dark letters on a light background. It elevates the content and subjegates the design. It's priorities. Whatever the old site was it was highly successful. Whatever you guys do I'll keep coming back.
Thanks thereminman, your feedback is much appreciated. You're exactly on par with the changes we plan to continue making. We were under such an unbelievably tight deadline on this, and there's only 2 of us working on it (not a huge corporate dev team, as some people think). The ideas are coming in faster than we can produce them, but I promise to keep at it till the site is exactly what you guys want.
I did notice that redundant post from sour grapes and plan to look at the logic to fix that asap.
Its funny, we were asking ourselves the exact same question about the popular tags, but don't know if people like them or not.
We were actually talking about the Twitter module this morning. Its just been nothing but a headache because of the high latency of the Twitter servers. This often is a major cause of the slow load times too. I suspect we will be dumping it soon, and at bare minimum, removing it from the main page.
Also keep in mind that some of the "lamer" modules you are seeing now (like the tags) are just placeholders for some really cool new features we're developing.
Anyway, we definitely appreciate all such well thought out suggestions and/or criticism. keep it coming and we'll do our best to accommodate!
It looks like the only thing that has changed on here is the colors, Fresno famous is now a inverted world, it would be cool to let users customize their own color schemes.
The search needs to be fixed, besides using keywords, there should be a date option too.
being able to embed videos or music players would be a nice for personal blogs.
I use the feed burner from Live Journal to get notifications of new posts, and I use recent comments to know what every one if talking about, making easier to find new posts and what every one has been commenting about in the recent days past.
