FRESNO, Calif., Nov. 3, 2009 – Fresno native Michael Luis Medrano will talk about his experiences publishing his first book during a visit to California State University, Fresno, on Nov. 12.
The Chicano Writers and Artists Association, a student-run organization at Fresno State, organized the event “In Conversation with Fresno Poet Michael Luis Medrano.” Miguel Jimenez, a writer for Café Magazine, will lead a discussion with Medrano about becoming a writer and using the San Joaquin Valley as the landscape for his first book Born in the Cavity of Sunsets, a collection of poems published by Bilingual Review Press through Arizona State University.
“We're inviting Michael Luis Medrano to share his experiences and first hand knowledge of putting his first book together with an audience of MFA students, writers and literary aficionados of the Fresno community,” said Mario Rosado, CWAA representative.
“This is also a great way to inform both prospective students who are thinking about pursuing an MFA degree in creative writing and writers looking forward to publishing their work,” he said.
Rosado and Jimenez are graduate students in Fresno State’s Master of Fine Arts program in which writers can earn degrees in fiction, nonfiction or poetry. The program, as well as student organizations, often invite writers for readings or Q&As such as the upcoming event featuring Medrano.
Medrano received a MFA degree in creative writing from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His work has appeared in The North American Review, The Bilingual Review, the Brick & Mortar Review and other literary journals. He teaches reading and essay writing at Fresno City College. He is working on a novel and another collection of poetry.
Copies of Medrano’s book will be available for cash purchase. The event is free and open to the public. It was sponsored by CWAA, the MFA in Creative Writing program at Fresno State, and the university’s Associated Students Inc.
