I am one proud Mama!!!
My girl is heading to San Jose to represent Fresno as one of many young Californians to attend the Congressional Youth Leadership Conference.
My little Sugar Baby who was nominated by her teacher, chosen by the US Senate and sponsored by many wonderful family and friends is the only student picked in Fresno to attend the Congressional Youth Leadership Conference.
This National Youth Leadership Conference begins March 12 and lasts 4 days. There she will be involved in workshops and conferences that will foster her leadership abilities, teach her leadership techniques and introduce her to like-minded students from all across California while representing Fresno as a future leader of our community.
Who would've thunk, huh? Considering all the negative statistics that many folks believe to be true about children of single-parent homes, my Sugar Baby seems to be breaking the mold.
I for one am proud of my girl whose name implies that she'd be one hell of a stripper!
And for pushing herself when I get overwhelmed and cannot do it for her!
So here we are, countless days of being all she can be, leading the pack, never holding back and $1,400.00 later she's off to represent ALL of Fresno's junior high school population; and thats one tall order!
Kudos to Clovis Unified for arming her with oodles of knowledge, for allowing her room to grow into herself, for overlooking her bold fashion statements that could easily be misconstrued as gang attire, for guiding her leadership abilities and recognizing the amazing person she is and for considering her an asset to her school!
Kudos to my baby for being everything I hoped she would be. A pat on her back for rising above the obstacles she and I have faced over the years and making a name for herself at the ripe old age of 13!
So to those who are down on single parents and their children, not everyone fits your narrow-minded stereo-types. Some of us actually take accountablity for mistakes we've made, never once allowing another to pay or pave our way, we choose to humble ourselves for the betterment of our children and hold ourselves to the highest standards which we pass along to our children in the form of pride, hard work and dedication. And it pays off!!!
I for one am proud to be the Mama of Tyra SugarBaby Vaquez!!
