A tale of two cities

It looks like it was Hamlet vs. the cage fighters at Woodward Park this weekend.

And the cage fighters probably won.

I've got nothing against cage fights. I don't even have anything against cage fights in the park. But this seems like the worst kind of bad planning and is bound to make the creative arts community feel unwanted.

While I give kudos to the promoter for getting the mayor and the police chief down the the event (I'll assume they weren't just there as couple of fight fans), it's a telling sign. Has the mayor ever been to the Rogue? To a Smog City Game? To Woodward Shakespeare, for that matter?

If not, take this as an opportunity to put the invitation out there. "Hamlet's" run isn't over yet. Let's send the mayor (and police chief) some mail.

Be nice!

Or, just wait until he's gone. I'm sure whoever is the next mayor will LOVE the invite.

MEH!

No need to chastise. Just clarifying any assumption that we've ignored the powers that be.
If they prefer men beating each other up over women knocking each other around, then so be it.
They just dont know what they're missing out on having a mini-skirted derby girl land in their lap.

roller mayor

it's good to at least know that the city big guys have been invited, and that they haven't attended roller derby. now we can feel free to chastise them for attending one sport and not another.

Yeah, connections to the

Yeah, connections to the fall of the Roman empire might be taking it a bit far...

Lola, it's great that you've made so many outreach attempts to these leaders; if you send me tickets, I promise not to disappoint :-). That said, I know that our mayor, police chief, council members and other electeds are asked to come to everything. I know—I've invited them to plenty of events.

I'm not saying it's right, but money and mass crowds are a natural draw for politicians. If I read correctly, Rumble in the Park drew thousands of people in, creating the largest event I've heard of at Woodward. It also drew in a few dollars, I'm sure. Should it have been scheduled at a different time/date than Shakespeare? No doubt.

Actually, FW's idea of emailing the mayor. If enough people show support for these cultural events, he'll show, especially if it can be tied to a legacy...

Smog City Roller Grrls

I am the PR officer for the Smog City Roller Grrls. Since the inception of our league back in April 2004 I have sent numerous letters requesting the Mayors presence at our events including benefits and bouts. I have also sent letters enlisting his involvement with the local charities we promote and raise money for; we are more than just skaters, we also give back to the community.
I have yet to receive a reply from him or his office.
We have also contacted the Police Chief as well with the same requests and at one point met him at a local Cigar Festival where we were volunteering. He made many promises to attend a bout making clear we should send him tickets.
Both recieved tickets to all events with a guarantee of special seating.
I have yet to see either at one bout or event. Nor have we recieved any acknowlegement from either that we even exist.
Trust me, we are not losing sleep over it.

vip treatment

i have no evidence to support this, but i'd imagine that the guests like mayor, chief of police, etc were given free tickets and other special treatment.

has anyone with rogue offered to buy any of these dudes a rogue pass? or tickets to a smog city game?

i'm just saying, let's not jump all over the for going to an event if they've not been given the same invite by us. that is, if they were given special treatment.
