Upcoming: Masumoto booksigning and Reel Pride

A couple of things to look out for:

* Rockstar farmer David Mas Masumoto will be signing copies of his latest, Wisdom of the Last Farmer, from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday at the Fig Garden Bookstore. This even is cool for three reasons (and probably more):

1.) You're supporting a great local author

2.) You're supporting a great local store

3.) Your support will encourage more of these types of events.

* Reel Pride's 20th Annual Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which is taking over the Tower (the whole district) starting Sept. 16.

The Festival’s 20th year will feature an eclectic five-day lineup of internationally award-winning feature films, documentaries and short films at the historic Tower Theater and its more intimate cabaret space the Starline Lounge. Festival organizers have searched the world for important and socially relevant films that otherwise would not be available on the big screen to Fresno’s film-loving community.

Along with the Rogue Festival (applications open Oct. 1), this is the Tower District's defining event. And for good reason. It has a long history as a well-run event that brings in a diverse audience and some high-quality films that wouldn't be found near Fresno otherwise (OK, maybe on Netflix or something).
