Here's a new something I'm going to try because other people do it and I like the idea. It's called Viva or Down With and it's essentially a rip off of those thumbs up thumbs down briefs newspaper editorial pages do. Only this'll be on a blog.
So ...
Viva The Fresno MET Museum, for its Green Eggs and the MET event. The museum has seen its share of controversies, so it's nice to see they haven't gotten gun shy about doing events that are outside what is expected. These events connect and egage with new audiences and that can only be a good thing. The museum has three exhibits on display right now that the whole city should be excited about. Here's to them keeping up the good work.
Viva Music in Fresno. As Mike Oz reports AFI is coming to the Rainbow Ballroom in January. This is just one of many, many, awesome shows that have come (or are coming) to the area. I'll refer you the The Bee's Post No Bills, but the fact is, we're getting some names acts coming through (and we're not talking about KISS). These are bands with real hype. Maybe Visalia doesn't have it on us after all. Congrats to the venues/promoters/music lovers who are making this happen.
Down With The Fresno Police Department and the city for not hiring a police auditor. As Bill McEwen pointed out in a column last week, the city has yet to fill the position for its independent police auditor. There were two officer-involved shootings in two days last week, which would be worrisome without knowing that one involved an un-armed man and the other a man with brandishing a replica gun.
From McEwen's column:
There have been 10 police shootings this year, six of them fatal. This is a reversal of a trend that saw use of force by Fresno police drop 25% the previous five years while calls for service rose 14%.
I'd come out and say that Fresno PD is out of control, but I'm afraid I'd get shot.
Ouch! I joke.
Serious though, we need to figure this out.
stop: audit time!
fpd - i'm not saying their job isn't extremely difficult or that they are always in the wrong, but fpd needs to feel a little less "threatened." there have been six fatalities at the guns of fpd this year alone.
that's 2/3 the number of fpd that have died in the last 100 years by gunfire. check the stats yourself.
is it dangerous out there? yes. do the police need to be cautious? yes. will the fpd and city be getting sued over most of these officer involved shootings? probably.
it's time to hire an auditor.
