What's a film commisioner good for?

Not his salary, apparently. Even when he brings in Steven f'in Spielberg.
Word is councilmember Jerry Duncan set forth a motion to defund the Fresno Film and Entertainment Commission. Here's some analysis from local independent filmamker Brodie Mash.
I'd suggest the council read this again.
If you care what happens with this, try to make it to the meeting and make some noise. Voting on the motion is scheduled for 2 p.m., tomorrow (that's June 17), in the Council Chamber at City Hall.

Eagle Field
Thanks to every one that came out for the FFC! Yeah, as far as Eagle Field, it's technically in Firebaugh but it's closer to Dos Palos so the mix-up happens all the time. (the full address is 11163 North Eagle Avenue Firebaugh, California 93622) The only scene (that I noticed) that made it out of everything was the 2 second or so shot of Indy & Mutt standing in front of the Peruvian airport when they were dropped off. That was Eagle Field.....in Firebaugh;)

Fresno City Film Commisioner Funded Another Year
Councilmember Duncan pulled his request to de-fund the city's film commissioner with the request of Commissioner Ray Arthur to submit a business plan for the coming year in regards to where money and focus will be spent.
Very Short Scenes
I haven't seen the film, but , I remember hearing the two locations were in the film very quick, like two seconds or so. In a lot of the articles on the shooting locations, I see both Firebaugh and Dos Palos as the location of Eagle Filed. I have been to Firebaugh once so I cannot say I am an expert as to the exact location of Eagle Field. Is it like Clovis West High School is located in Fresno or Clovis?
Firebaugh
Hey it was technically Dos Palos, not Firebaugh! Very different!
Has anyone who has seen the movies been able to point out where or if these scenes were in the film? One of the lamer opening scenes when IJ is being intimidated by the Russians looked a bit like the Eagle Field in Dos Palos, but I'm not sure.
Council Will Vote on 25 Motions on Thursday
The Fresno City Council will voe on 25 motions including de-funding the film commissioner's position ,to change Mayor Autry's budget on Thursday.
I was at the budget hearing this afternoon. I think 8-10 people including myself spoke on behalf of not de-funding the Film Commissioner's job.

From Fresnofilm.com:
INDIANA JONES AND THE QUEST FOR THE PERFECT LOCATION 10-15-07
"(Fresno)---When Steven Spielberg remarked to Fresno Film & Entertainment Commissioner Ray Arthur that this was the first time he had ever filmed in Fresno, they were standing in front of the old control tower at Chandler Executive Airport.
...
At that point it became a full fledged production with Steven and a cast and crew of 300," Arthur said.
...
The week's activities were a reunion of sorts for Arthur and Spielberg who worked together exactly 15 years ago in October of 1992.
...
According to Arthur, "The opening segment of the original Jurassic Park was shot at Red Rock Canyon State Park and I was fortunate to work with Steven for a few days."
...
Not sure if that qualifies Arthur as responsible for bring Spielberg or not.
Fresno County film commissioner Gigi Gibbs was also involved with the Indiana Jones film as some of it was filmed in Firebaugh as well.
I hadn't heard that Ray Arthur brought Steven Spielberg into our area, where did you hear that he was responsible for that?
The meeting is coming up in about an hour
Hopefully we'll see some of yous guys out there.
