Over on the Beehive there's a fun survey about
pop culture. It was first given to the 2 Fresno candidates for
mayor, but then opened up for the general 'you and I'.
One question it asked was: 'if you could snap your fingers and bring one chain store that's not here, what would it be? Why?'
After completing the survey, I laughed to myself thinking that we might serve our town better by *eliminating* more chain stores.
SO............. if you could snap your fingers and make a chain DISAPPEAR , which would it be? Why?
Hands down, Walmart needs to
Hands down, Walmart needs to go! No other chain has done more to destroy small businesses and the "main street" of Smalltown USA than Walmart, not to mention their role in the repression of free speech.
they come and they go

I always find discussions
I always find discussions about chain stores interesting, as they rarely include grocery stores. What if we got rid of any grocery store chain that didn't buy their produce direct from farmers in the Valley?
Anyway, I'd get rid of Walmart and K-Mart first. And McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Carl's Junior, Domino's, Quizno's, Subway...oh wait, then there would be nowhere left to eat in SE Fresno.
Like Ed Said
Walmart is the easy easy choice. No one chain has killed off more local businesses than that store - in every town it infects.

Chain stores going out of business
Some stores on the list are just shrinking the number of stores in the chain. The ones that are "shrinking" will probably go bankrupt eventually.
My point is that the free market as the great equalizer puts heavy pressure on all businesses to either sink or swim. 80% of all business startups fail in the first year or two.
It's very tough out there to make a business work whether it's a little one man operation or a national chain. The ones that thrive must be a lot better at it than the competition. Gottschalks just got kicked off the NYSE the other day because their stock sank below $1 a share.
