Why Does This Make Me Angry?

From a lcoal small grade school...

" Student Council Announcement: Get ready to show some school spirit! You are encouraged to wear your favorite sports team clothing on Friday Jan 30th.

Guidelines: Please, NO Bulldog (CSU-FRESNO) affiliated attire, oversized clothing, hats, or sports make-up."

What's the point then man? I love Fresno State.

Just the other day in the office, I wore my Oakland Raider Beanie. One guy rolls up and says, I look like I'm a mugger. Another comes up and says, you should just tattoo bulldogs on your forearms and Fresno on your forehead to complete your look.

I'm not sure WTF or HowTF I'm supposed to feel about this all. I'm just pissed that people judge in this way.

thoughts on discussion

if i just overheard you say that quote, no i wouldn't just get up, go over to your table and tell you that i thought your comment was stupid. in that context i would definitely say that to the people i'm sitting with. however, if you said it in a public discussion that i'm a part of (which we all are here on ff), then yes, i would gladly let you know my opinion of the comment.

but, let's also take notice, i'm not calling you (whoever commented, it's hard to know as there are only two commenters logged in on this thread) stupid. i'm saying that what was said was stupid. there is a difference. both can be taken as slights, but one is a direct insult on a person, and the other is an assessment of a comment. and, i explained why i think the comment is stupid.

now, as for people not joining the dialog, i'd venture that there are a whole host of reasons. i'm curious how you know for a fact? i'm not trying to pick a fight or quibble, but you since you said it for the record i was curious to further details.

i will admit that my assessment of the comment was harsh, and it reflects my annoyance at comments that go like,
"You know what they ssay about dressing like trash,"
"recruit uncivilized criminals you get criminal behavior," and
"easy to see why certain gang members would identify with the Bulldogs since the Bulldogs seem to commit many crimes themselves."

these comments drip with prejudice, and i wonder if it's comments like that keeping people from joining the community.

way off topic.

"It's easy to see why certain gang members would identify with the Bulldogs since the Bulldogs seem to commit many crimes themselves."

If you overheard me say that at the Landmark would you call me effin stupid to my face?
I think not, as that would be rude and uncalled for.
We can all agree that Leo is a fantastic individual that can wear whatever he wants. Maybe it angers you Leo because there is a certain amount of racial profiling involved. Would edluv get the same reaction in the same outfit?
For the record, I know for a fact that it's derogatory comments like these:

what a funny ignorant guest
wow, that is effin stupid.

that make the good folks of Fresno reluctant to join in the dialogue at FF.

It's a question of

It's a question of priorities. What is more important? To show your support for the local team or take a chance on appearing to be a gang member? I wouldn't wear a bulldog hat or shirt if they paid me. Especially not in my neighborhood.

so off topic

"It's easy to see why certain gang members would identify with the Bulldogs since the Bulldogs seem to commit many crimes themselves."

wow, that is effin stupid. the bulldog gang affiliated themselves with the university by name long before there were any public scandals involving student athletes from the university.

as for the university and how they pick their athletes, you're blaming less than 1% for the entire population. and, the "other" guest that proposed how colleges recruit, come on, be real. why not recruit the best talent you're able to recruit? sure, you want to check character, but it would be asinine to just 95% of your athletes from your count just because they are in the county. college athletics are big business, and you can't be so myopic.

but back to what legal alien actually posted; it's too bad that kids can't wear fsu gear in fresno, but that's the reality we live in. our city has a gang issue, and sadly kids can't just represent without other issues factoring in.

as for how others reacted to you, that sucks. no one should have to be prejudged because they are of a certain ethnic group and are wearing team gear. there are plenty of raider & bulldog fans that aren't gangsters or nefarious characters. you should proudly let people know that you are a fan of a team, a gainfully employed citizen, a great guy, and the best coffee roaster in the central valley. if they still want to judge you by looks after all that, eff 'em.

Wins? Wins?

They have wins?
It's time to reorganize how athletes are picked at Fresno State.
When you recruit uncivilized criminals you get criminal behavior.
The rule should be 95 percent of all scholarships and players on each team should be local high school athletes.
Not just coaches and doaners sons
50% from the City of Fresno high schools.
45% from the Fresno County high schools.
Then the other 5% came be recuited from elsewhere.
Fresno State wants local support and donations from local businesses.
Then they should give the local athletes opportunities.

idea?

It's not as though the Raiders and Bulldogs are unaware that their clothing is popular amongst gangs, they could and probably should do something to help combat the negative image.
Maybe add the line "I'm a FAN not a GANG Member" to their clothing. Or just a circle/slash over the word GanG right under their logo.
How much money would they lose??
It's easy to see why certain gang members would identify with the Bulldogs since the Bulldogs seem to commit many crimes themselves. I've been calling them the BullCriminals since the days of samurai swords and point shaving scandals. Their stats should read Wins, Losses and Arrests.

The people who wear it as

The people who wear it as gang-affiliated clothing ruin it for the rest of us. There is no reason you should not be able to show your support for your home team without being labeled a banger. Now, I can't blame a cop for giving a second glance to someone wearing it... that's just prudent. But for an individual to pre-judge you based on the fact that you like your home college team? That's just stupid and ignorant.
