you can't always get what you want
the song was right, you can't always get what you want. sadly, i was hearing it as we walked out of a very disappointing fuego game. i know that pablo campos just headed off to a pro career, and amary nunes is injured, but the team looked like they were meeting for the first time in a 4-1 loss. seriously, i think there were under a dozen good passes made over the 90 minutes, and one of them led to the lone fuego goal.
the fuego entered the match leading the division, and should still make playoffs, but they have to show much better than they did last night. and that's true at every position. i'm not trying to be overly critical, or blame the loss on one person, but it seemed like the fuego's goalkeeper had hands of stone, and he wasn't using them to punch balls away. instead, he used them to repeatedly drop fairly routine shots, producing easy rebounds that we slotted home in the back of the net.
it's odd that the fuego are having to find a new identity this late in the season, but that's where they are. they have a few chances to figure out who will be their offensive threat and shore up their defense in preparation for the playoffs.
one other thing on the night: why did they only have two of the food stations open @ the chuck? and they didn't even have either of the taquerias open! i was looking forward to enjoying some asada nachos but everything was locked up tight. huh? there were over 3000 people at the game, can't we get more than two of the food joints open?

this lady was having so much fun at the game that she was reading a book
yep
you're totally right about all of the long range shots. we were joking about that being the offense, like maybe the coach said, "if you're within 35 yards and have the ball blast away."
i've seen that from them before, but it had seemed that it was a little calmed down by having a great point person.
it makes me a bit sad because i know they have talented players, but that effort the other night did little to showcase any of them.
i'll admit, their former goalkeeper, nick hammond, is a friend of mine, and i really feel like he got, umm, mishandled by the team last off season. but he's moved on, and so has the team. however, it was apparent that the defense and the current keeper weren't in sync that night, and the keeper even got in a shouting match with one of his defenders. not a fine moment for the squad.
just a bad, bad match
I don't know man, Fuego had plenty of shots on goal. They lofted at least 6 shots way over the goal from 35 yards out and probably had double that many shots from 25 to 30 yards out (of course, those were just blind shots into masses of defenders, but hey...).
Who am I kidding, it was a shitty outing.
As well, I am starting to wonder if Alcorn knows how a keeper is supposed to work. After getting rid of highly touted Hammond to work through three new kids all of who gave up goals like crazy, it'll be interesting to see what he does once he realizes that he doesn't have the offense to outscore all the goals his defense will give up.
