Welch is best known for his large scale abstract paintings. Contrasting geometric pattern with irregular form; and glossy candy-coated surfaces with bondo-matte pastels, Welch’s work is balanced by a sense of studied control and charged richness of both color and visual texture. The most recent work suggests ambiguous cityscapes that fall apart into random color and converging line, interpretations of the eroding economic climate and the barrage of conflicting mass-media noise and imagery.
