Anybody have any information on these new places???
I've heard that Fagan's (downtown) is becoming the Del Carmen lounge (or maybe a new name is in the works)...ROE up on Palm and Nees to serve Japanese food...The Twist Lounge coming to some part of north Fresno in the near future...
I like the sounds of this, but information is hard to come by... feel free to post updates if you have any. Thanks.
way to be Anti --ya did me a solid
Bullfights? No...
That's way cruel to the animals (I don't even like rodeos for that reason.
---though female barrell racers will always catch my eye.)
-Tractor pulls (using tractors or trucks)
---waaaaaaay too much fun for this gearhead... I love 'em, ---thanks for the link.
-Horse Pulls (on the other hand,) are amazing in that they are so quiet, ---and usually deal with 'heavy horses,' or 'working breeds,' --which are my fav. breeds.
--The animal is not harmed one bit, --they enjoy pulling and the challange of it, and they usually are teamed (two to four) and are just listening to each other and their handler and just stomping away ---while hauling an aircraft carrier down a (much shorter) path...
It's like the total opposite of a tractor pull, but amazing (and a rare opportunity to see these beautiful animals really in their element.)
aagain, you're an archivist and researcher to be reckoned with, (I salute you.)
I am definitely catching one this summer... (yay.)
Tractor Pulls and Bull Fights
do you really want to go to a Tractor Pull or how about a bull fight. These events do go on around the valley just not in the city of Fresno. Look out side and you will find those events.

maybe you need to move to Gustine Eric, they have Tractor Pulls and Bullfights there every year.
okay, I want a real jazz lounge too... but....
I didn't move here for the 'clubbing.'
I lived in Philly, and NY and have had my fill of that...
I love a good club
I love a good lounge
I love a good setting to see a great band, good sound, and questionable atmosphere that is one half
'...this place could explode at any minute (mixed with)
'this place definitely could explode at any minute...'
I know, I know, we need all that to be credible members of society,
and NOT walk with our knuckles dragging behind us as a cultured society...
But you know what I really want?
(And a new 'club,' just reopened right across the street from me... (Bliss.)
wunnerful....
What I want more than anything???
A decent, honest to god, loud noisey,
'...this thing DEFINITELY is going to esplode:
Tractor Pull...
(with corn-dogs.)
There just aren't any.
(no truck pulls, either.)
Not Even 'Horse-Pulls.'
I mean, I'm sooooo wanting to embrace my hayseed tendencies,
-and am more than waiting for this peril and opportunity to present itself...
But no.
*sigh*
At least the dirt-tracks are running semi-regular.
(Please, God, just once...
-give us a decent tractor-pull?
..please?)
(---I'll pitch in twenty bucks towards covering 'CrossRoads' parking lot with dirt... just to get this party started..)
-I'm serious...
I'll have to check those
I'll have to check those out. Thanks ed.
stormwysper, although there
stormwysper,
although there aren't any jazz "clubs" there is a lot of jazz in fresno on a regular basis.
on the 1st & 3rd sunday evening of every month there is jazz @ tokyo garden.
on the 2nd & 4th sunday evening there is a jazz jam @ 1040 n fulton (formerly tower mosaic).
i'm pretty sure all these are free events, check out jazz fresno for more info (hopefully).
559rell,
i think you're right. it's unfortunate that we don't have more diversity in our club scene. but, maybe it also comes down to who comes out and pays the cover. and perhaps why the lounges don't do as well and end up being clubs. perhaps the people that just want to lounge about and have some drinks are going to one of the many bars, for more or less the same thing, without the ultra swanky decor.
I wish there was a jazz club
I wish there was a jazz club in Fresno. Unfortunately it's these flavor of the month clubs that are around for about a year then shut down for 2 months as they remodel and change their name just to repeat the same thing again six months later.
Anybody notice...
...that lounges in Fresno, don't really know how to be "lounges"?
Some of this is hearsay, some is from experience, but I've noticed that the lounges in Fresno turn out to be typical nightclubs, with fancier decor... playing most of the same music you'd hear at any given dance club here in the 'No.
Are they scared to be truly different? Scared that they won't survive if they were to be different? Is it strictly for the money?
We are long overdue for specialty nightclubs: A reggae club, a jazz club, a club for world/tribal music, a neo-soul lounge, etc.
We need clubs that are consistent and not afraid to be different.
Top 40, rap, and r&b are played everywhere by the same DJ's hopping spots throughout the week. Everybody shouldn't be doing everything. I wish these clubs would specialize in one or two certain types of music and keep that vibe going for at least a year.
Try it out. It just might work.
In Fresno, you have to worry about what day of the week it is too much. Pick the wrong day at any of our clubs and you're in for a rude awakening. It's time to specialize.

hmm...I don't recommend the potato skins
My wife and were excited to try Carlton's last week. It's nice inside, with a beautiful bar, though the rest of the decor doesn't seem to fit with what we were expecting.
Not sure about the hours. We went just after work, about 5:30 p.m., and were the only ones eating dinner though three or four people were at the bar.
The menu is pretty small, but that's probably smart for a new place. We split the fried fish, which was great (and more than one of us could have eaten). The potato skins, on the other hand, were filled with bacon-flavored Velveeta (I think - at any rate, they jiggled). I ate one, but only after dumping the gravy-esque cheese out.
Carlton's on The Beehive
Jane:
I talked about Carlton's a little bit on my blog yesterday.
Here's a link:

Watch the Beehive over the next couple days for another post about Carlton's.
Carlton's Bar & Grill
Can anyone tell about Carlton's Bar & Grill downtown Fresno by Ventra & O St? Is is open like? What time of atmosphere does it have?
Broadway Ale Works is the new brewery.
There's a site, but not much on it:

Twist has a site, too, but again, not much on it

Roe is open.
I drove past it today and there was a sign that said so.
2039 ultra lounge
Is the the name of the lounge going into Fagans old place. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek a couple of weeks back. Its looking pretty cool inside. The guy i talked to was named Steve, he was outside having a smoke one evening while i was walking by. It was the second time i had talked to him so he asked if i wanted to check out the progress. Me being the nosey guy that i am, i went in. Their totally redoing the inside floors, walls, bar, everything. When i first talked to him he said they weren't looking to be a night club, just a lounge.
There are a couple of other places opening up downtown. Someone is opening a Brew Pub on Broadway over by The Chuck. Then there is Carltons Bar and Grill on O St and Ventura by the new appeals court. I don't have any details on those places.
For some reason...
I had a feeling that Twist was gonna be tha big one. I hope it turns out as good as it sounds.
I went thru tha Palm and Nees center the other night, but there was no sign of Twist or a place that looks like it might become Twist, so I thought I might have had some misinformation. Glad to read that Twist & ROE are opening up next to each other. This should work well with tha places already at Palm and Herndon.
About Del Carmen, I've heard things for a while and there's a different name on the windows (can't remember at tha moment) but it's good that they're moving along. October is good with me ;-)

Coming to Fresno
I heard the lounge downtown is to open in October. I was under the impression that the name was derived from the street address on Kern. It is supposed to have a separate wine bar.
a little info...
Roe and Twist are in the same area at Palm/Nees. That looks to be a hotspot for food, drinks and nightlife. Watch for an upcoming story from Joan Obra on this.
Twist, from what I've heard, is looking to do it really big. I heard that DJ A.M. was going to be at their grand opening and that they're going to try to bring in cool entertainment too. Roe is supposed to be really nice, too. This is just all just word of mouth stuff that I've heard around town...
As for the former Fagan's -- I haven't heard much.
