2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the "Summer of Love". 1967 was a time where our country was in turmoil over the war in Vietnam, the Beatles were taking a backseat to Hendrix and Joplin as the music moved from a folk/rock style to psychedelic/anti-war rock.
It was truly, one of the very few times in our history where music helped change a generation. Monterey Pop was billed as the first major outdoor music festival of it's kind. It was followed by 500,000 strong attendance on a country farm, in upstate New York, billed as Woodstock.
In commemoration of this great period in musical history, The Crossroads, Wizard Enterprises, Heineken, and Famous Dave's is proud to present:
"Fresno's 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love"
Headlining the show will be Summer of Love alumnus Big Brother and the Holding Company. We've invited them back after a nearly sold out Crossroads show earlier this year. The original members of the band will bring with them the very talented Kathy Richardson. If you missed the last show.....don't miss this one as Ms. Richardson will give every Joplin fan in attendance a reason to celebrate. Cathy and the band mesmerized 300 Crossroad fans with a chilling recreation of Janis at her best.
If there's any doubt check out www.cathyrichardson.com. Go to "Videos" and check out "Love, Janis".
Also on the bill will be another Summer of Love alumnus, Barry McGuire and Terry Talbot. Barry's "Eve of Destruction" displaced the Beatles from their number one spot in the Summer of Love. McGuire, with Mason Profit's Talbot will perform a set from their stage show "Trippin the 60's".
The rest of the day will be filled with outstanding local bands playing music from either Woodstock, Monterey Pop or Peoples Park, which was a popular free concert park in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district.
Local bands include:
The Rudy Parris Band Band of Gypsy's
The Double Doors The Doors
Heavy Weather Santana
Green Machine The Grateful Dead
Sippy & Ol Guzzler Mama's & the Papa's/Jefferson Airplane
