Gunpowder Drawing "Tracy's Tiger" by Robert Weibel at Gallery 25
Gallery 25 is open Friday Saturday Sunday 1 - 4 PM and ArtHOP 5 - 8 As a contribution to the William Saroyan Centennial Gallery 25 Members Exhibit, Robert Weibel created "Tracy's Tiger" with assistance from Derek Weibel and John D. Hix; a gunpowder drawing 7 X 3 feeton white paper scroll. The piece was created at night with a circle of family and friends. I ignited gunpowder explosives laid on white paper in a particular pattern. As gunpowder ripped across the paper it was compressed in specific places to create intense flash patterns. Soon after, tiger claws were added by a second burning and marks made by charcol from the previous evenings bonfire. The transformation of matter (gunpowder) into another state (the charred drawing) is recorded at the moment of explosion and results in this chart of time, process and transformation. The sudden fire and smoke is also a kick for both young and old. After Gai Guo-Qiang, whose huge gunpowder drawings i first experienced in 2004 in Washington DC and constitute a new medium of contmeporary artistic expression. In the play, Tracy's Tiger, the character Thomas Tracy has a tiger who is hip wise and invisable. In the course of the play the tiger becomes visable; threatening the public and causing panic on the streets of San Francisco. Tracy's Tiger by Linda Alper, Douglas Langworthy, Penny Metropulos and Sterling Tinsley based on a novella The Barber Whose Uncle had his Head Bitten Off by a Circus Tiger by WILLIAM SAROYAN.
