More family, less fun: Fresno State bans alcohol at sporting events

Fresno State announced yesterday that it will disallow the sale of alcohol at university-owned venues. Stop shaking: the ban may not go into effect for two more years. The school's concession contract with Ovation runs through 2008, but Fresno State could decide to enforce the ban sooner. Sales at the Save Mart Center won't be affected because it is owned by an auxiliary group, and not the university itself.

School officials estimate they could loose $100,000 a year from alcohol sales. Fresno State makes $2.24 on every beer sold.

thanks for the help

i'm a student workin on a persuassive speech against alcohol being sold at sport events. thanks for the info

Tailgating will continue

The ban on alcohol applies only to alcohol sold inside the stadium. Tailgate parties will not have to be beer-free; if you want to drink a few brews before the game, just show up a little early to the field!

I can't help but wonder how the school plans to recoup the fiscal losses they are going to take as a result of this new policy. With tuitions climbing, campus housing prices climbing, and school employees wanting salary increases, I hope the burden of this revenue deficit won't be placed on the students; we are hurting for moneye nough as it is!

yes again

Fresno State could ban alcohol at the SMC if they so desired to be more consistant with CSU policy. They haven't announced plans to do so yet.

Basketball Games

Isn't it true that the University has the power to not allow the serving of alcohol at Fresno State basketball games even if they take place in the SaveMart Center.

yes

Sales at the Save Mart Center won't be affected because it is owned by an auxiliary group, and not the university itself.

a question

I heard somewhere that the alcohol ban would only be at college events held on a facility owned by the school? IS this true? if it it, does that mean basketball games at savemart center will still serve beers?

I am not sure there is any trutth to this, but i wonder.

from below!

good riddance

Good riddance. And I'm not just saying that because I'm under 21 years of age. I dread going to FSU football games because I've had beer dumped on me twice.

ahhh, it's not just CSUF

The ban is for all California State Universities...we're not special enough to get singled out.
