Restaurant Rumor Roundup

The rumors are swirling! Over the past two weeks we've heard that Upstairs Downtown, J Ho's, Echo, and Coconut Club are all closing. Our crack investigative team, armed with a telephone and Yahoo! Local, sets the record straight.

We hear from owner David Alexander that Upstairs Downtown is not only not closing, but will host a bevy of special events in the coming weeks. On January 21st, Fresno's finest restaurant presents Roots Revival, a "Dining Experience Celebrating Winter and its Abundance of Root Vegetables in Conjunction with T & D Willey Farms and Slow Food Madera." The four-course menu is $55 per person, and features such delights as Jicama and Celery Root Remoulade and Chocolate Beet Cake. Reservations are required and are filling up fast.

J Ho's has officially closed. The latest rumor is that a Thai restaurant is moving in. Thai in the Tower has been long overdue. Fingers crossed that it will be open late and on Sunday.

Birdies are chirping that the Coconut Club will close and revert back into the Daily Planet. No official yea or nay, but the phone number on the Coconut Club's website has been disconnected. Hmm.

And finally, according to the person who answered the phone, Echo has no plan to shutter its doors. Happy eating!

Food!

Coconut Club is finished and I can't say I feel badly about it! I have a family member in the car business (Robert Martins previous gig) and I was told that he lost his a** on the Coconut Club. Maybe it taught him to stop the bigotry!

I also heard that a Mediterranean restaurant will be taking it's place. Thats something the Tower could use! (Along with the Pho restaurant requested above!!) Hopefully it's not just a rumor....

Rumors are fun.

I can understand the rumor about Upstairs Downtown. It is eerily empty whenever I go. A little marketing could go a long way.

Again, Echo would appear to have the Grim Reaper looming large. Its problems are very different though. I never ate at Echo when it was in the tower but it is clear Echo forgot to bring its sole when it moved north.

I'm a bad dude

Is this wrong? When I saw that Echo (in North Fresno) might be closing I got a little smurk going.

I would never want people to lose their business or jobs but...Echo did bail the Tower (when it was a success there) and migrate north.

Put simply, they sold out. There would be a little bit of Karma Justice if Echo didn't make it up North.

Thai in the Tower

Just to let you know that there was once a Thai restaurant and a Japanese restaurant in the tower, and they lasted a little while and closed.

What the Tower needs is a 'Pho' Cafe'

I can't say I'm sad to see the Madonna-blaring patio of Jay Ho's to be over. Don't get me wrong, we all love hits of the 90s, but the slightly leather bar feel of the joint wasn't working out. A good thai restaurant would be totally welcome.
