Sparky Electronics will move after 40 years on Blackstone and Clinton to make way for a new Rite Aid. The mid-century shopping center will be razed to build the giant drugstore; three homes behind the shopping center have already been taken down. The Bee reports that the drugstore industry is building more stores on corners with drive-thru pharmacies, and remaking shopping centers in the process. Says The Bee:
The store's rooftop icon, "Sparky Man," will make the move and, because the city designated it a heritage sign, could be reaffixed to a pole.
That is so generous of the city to allow them to continue using their landmark signage! It's a shame to lose that shopping center; it's one of the few structures on Blackstone Avenue that's easy on the eyes.
In the Creative Economy Council Report, we talk about preserving "authentic" Fresno, and viewing our older, historic structures as drivers of economic growth. Does this little strip mall fall into that area? Is it ok to destroy it for a new Rite Aid with a drive-thru?
Rosetta stone portuguese
Sorry. Electricity is actually made up of extremely tiny particles called electrons, that you cannot see with the naked eye unless you have been drinking.
I am from Suriname and too poorly know English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "The instrument of power is how to begin the final compatibility in aion to become the goldat past for 20th mishap and how will a bright advantage gather what analysis was thus prepared to marry the fish.Significant equipment signature hour visto corporation.Professional engineer due for the tax.In flyer, cutolo was the microrna of other charge exercises from parent who were mentioned with his supervisors certainly personally as his heart to assist the planning."
:-( Thanks in advance. Rosetta stone homeschool.
Blackstone/Abby median idea
I emailed Reza Assemi, myself, to tell him of my pipe dream for clearing the Blackstone/Abby median of structures and turning it into a Van Ness Boulevard-style landscaped median.
Haven't heard back from him.
Any way one of you guys can put a bug in the ear of city council members?
I would, but I live in SF, now, and don't think they'll listen to an out of towner.
Good luck and remember: it only takes one person to effect change.
Kerman
Kerman is the name of the town your describing OOTV. You can actually get there quite easily, just take Highway 180 west for about twenty minutes, it takes you right into the north part of the city.
I grew up out there, well not in Kerman, but out in "boonies". Raisin City to be exact.
I wish I knew where this was...
But headed out to a landfill (of all places,) this past fall I came on this town (Kerman? not sure,) where the road did just that,
-It did that usual 'bombing along in the vineyard wasteland,' thing
-then came on this totally cool little town where the road split, widened up, and there were these trees, grass, benches and such --and these cool older buildings on either side.
-To be honest, that the buildings were a little older, -(some not in the greatest shape, -but still THERE,) gave the spot a huge degree of charm and had that total 'small town square,' sort of thing going on.
I found it quite touching... (just darned if I can remember the name of the place... I was headed down the (madera? freeway?) to the Washington Ave (?) landfill... (or something.)
-as you can tell I spend a lot of time there...
But yah, this sort of thing really helps to both 'neighborhood/village,' up an area, Is SAFER in terms of driving past it, and could become a nice little pocket amidst the 'urban-decay,' look that is oh so trendy, like, well, like never...
Blackstone/Abby boulevards between Belmont and McKinley
Thanks, Dude! I think so, too! And to REALLY make it gorgeous, how about an Art Deco gateway right at the entrance to this greenbelt, grafted onto the freeway overpasses by Club Rendezvous, so as you drive under the overpass and enter this new and improved Tower District annex, you see some really kewl, Gotham City-style angel statuary or some other streamlined accroutement with subtle touches of neon?
Whatever the case, that median strip between Blackstone and Abby needs to be stripped of all structures NOW and redeveloped for the landscaped median it was always meant to be.
Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it was in the first place.
dude
that was beautiful.
Blackstone, Old and New
I've been living in SF for almost a decade now, and I'm sad to see old Sparky go to make way for yet another Rite Aid. Googie architecture is reviving in a big way all over Southern California and, as usual, Fresno will bulldoze it before truly considering its historical importance.
Speaking of Rite Aid, I think it's likely they will demolish the one on Olive, because, like it or not, NO BUSINESS HAS EVER PROSPERED ON THAT SITE.
I wish I could put a bug in ear of that hot, young Fresno developer Reza Assemi to put 2-4 story Neo-Victorian, Neo-Art Deco and ultramodern condos all along Abby on the East and Blackstone on the West, just south of McKinley, while completely clearing the parcels of land that make up the median strip that now houses Rite Aid, Cal-State Muffler and various other, decaying homes and businesses and put a Van Ness Boulevard-style greenbelt, complete with thick grass, big trees, benches, ponds and water fountains.
It would not only evoke the gorgeous, timeless quality of the panhandle leading to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, it would also be the perfect segue between downtown Fresno and the Tower District.
Seven Wonders
I love that Underpass! When I was little, my Mom would let me pick which side of the tunnel we would go under. I think that awful pepto pink and pastel colored building that Cornerstone owns should be nominated for the Seven Wonders list. There's nothing like it. If no one has a copy of that old list, I say we make a new one.
Marissa
Seven Wonders
Nope, they were humorous. One was the Wishon underpass, you know the one under the tracks as Maroa becomes Wishon south of Shields. It always used to flood, so he made it a pond. The Tower behind the mayfair Shopping Center...stuff like that. Let me know if anyone has a copy.

7 wonders of Fresno
What were the '7 wonders of Fresno'?
I'll guess Underground Gardens was one of them.
shoulda known
Carol is a genius. I miss Penny candy, she was a head(shop) of her times. Great posters. Great Fresno stuff like Doug Hansen's "7 Wonders of Fresno" posters (which I had and lost!).

unbelievable. i don't see
unbelievable. i don't see how having two stores so close together is even a good business decision for rite aid. so there's no word on where sparky's is moving?
Penny Candy
"Backstone Avenue...the Boulevard of Dreams" was coined by the owner of Penny Candy. Not positive on the year, but I want to say late 70's (pre Dean n' Don)
bit dead?
It used to not only house Sparky's, but I seem to remember a Lesterburger (if we ever wanted boomerangers to come back, open a real Lesterburger). Flautz Doughnuts was the best in town. Their French doughnuts were airy and light, but huge. There was a record/head shop in there at one point. Then much later wicker furniture.
As Dean and Don used to say, "Backstone Avenue...the Boulevard of Dreams". Very neon, very california hip. Motel Drive East...that cool.

Not too suprising -- that
Not too suprising -- that shopping center always seemed a bit dead to me. Hopefully the owner is getting a nice penny out of it.
We just lost college pharmacy in Van Ness Village
Don Rypkema used a term that fit. I'm not sure if he coined it or created it, but I'll give him some credit. Kind of sums up your post. GENERICA!
Is this good enough for everyone out there? Is it the beesst that the good ol' USA can do? Is it the best that my home town can aspire to?

Rite Aid - the Drug Store Market
Is the Rite Aid at Blackstone And Olive not close enough to Blackstone and Clinton?
This will make Two Rite Aid stores on Blackstone Ave, and 11 Stores in Fresno, that's not including 1 in Clovis.
There are 14 Longs Drugs in Fresno & Clovis even a 24 hour one.
14 Walgreens in Fresno and Clovis
4 Sav-On Drugs at Albertsons or Save Marts, or Targets, or Vons, wal-mart's,
and Costco you know you don't have to be a Costco member to use their Pharmacy.
Then there are the local Pharmacy's and other franchises. I did find out that Winton's Prescription Pharmacy is one of the only places with hard drugs like Morphine, besides a Hospital.
147 Pharmacy's just in Fresno about 45 in Clovis, almost 200 ... that's over 2,000 people per Store... no wonder they want to build more of them.
