Porky's in trouble over copyright
Submitted by jarah on Mon, 01/23/2006 - 11:50.
Porky's, the bar and rib house near Hoover High, is facing a lawsuit from BMI, a performance rights group that helps manage copyrights and licensing for musicians and other performers. Seems Porky's has been playing music without paying licensing fees. We feel bad for Porky's for getting singled out. This is yet another in a long string of legal woes for number one porkster-owner Christopher Funch.
Mr. Funch, if you'll recall, learned he was the father of Amber Frey's eldest child last year. We think BMI might have to get in line behind five years of back child support. Any lawyers out there, help us out: who has seniority?

gimme a break
next time someone does a karaoke version of "Hotel California" I expect to see Randy Meisner to collect his royalty check
i've heard the same that is kind of 30$ per year. I hope I won't get fake infos to you.
hi
The license for music is quite cheap. for 100 songs is like 30 $ / year or something like this. I think it's not worths this risk.
This story got dugg 1000 times
Fresno is quite popular again.

Re: BMI
BMI has been doing this for years, it's really nothing new. I don't think it's related to the changes in the record industry, because that's not BMI's game. BMI, ASCAP and SESAC are music publishing royalty firms that represent the people who write the songs, not the record companies.
The pharmacy companies had a similar problem.
I believe the pharmacy companies had a problem in the early 1900s of not being able to patent a plant. The only way to patent it is to make it slighly unique.(synthetic man made stuff)Then patent.
I make the comparison because for the longest time music had the lockdown on artists distribution etc. With that quickly taken away they are using the only means they have to not change how they do buisness.
Steve jobs is still a genius and has learned much from Bill.
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

it's not that outrageous
Most places that use music as a part of their own income
pay fees to BMI and ASCAP----whether it's a student union
or a bar or a radio station. This is how recording artists
collect their royalties, and those organizations are the
ones that are set up to do it.
There was this club in LA a ways back called Club 88 that
would not pay their fees, and insisted that bands play no covers....and of course even bands that play originals occassionally
put a cover in---reworked in their own style or as an encore or whatever...but the owner would come and wack the 'no covers' sign with his cane if you ever tried to pull one over on him.
(the club smelt like cat pee....not sure if that's a coincidence or what....Maybe BMI brings in the cats to put the pressure on?)
fare is fair
If your gonna be a top 40 type of bar, and play top 40 songs, I think it is fair that you pay top 40 prices.
BMI music nazis
Porky's is not the only place in town BMI has been after, Porky's is the only one that's been accused so far. If you did not know they tried to go after Full Circle, they wanted them to buy a license so in case performers play BMI's owned songs.
personally I think this is crazy, next thing they will copyright musical notes. Then people will be sued for using a middle "C" note.
