Fresno State bans Fiji

Fresno State announced today it has banned the Fiji frat on campus for five years. This follows the alcohol poisoning death of 19 year-old former student and frat member Danny Daniels. According to the University's statement, the five year ban means the fraternity:

* Cannot represent itself as being affiliated with the university.
* Cannot recruit members under the fraternity name.
* Cannot apply for nor receive student funding from the university.
* Cannot have access to campus facilities or participate in university activities (such as intramural sports, Vintage Days, etc).

The most severe punishment would have been a lifetime ban. The fraternity could still file an appeal.

Sorry Tommy

I don't want them in my neighborhood either! I say leave them right where they are now.

This thread took a turn for the surreal. But I agree with Orange Bear. The methadone clinic on Van Ness is a cancer in the Tower that needs to be excised. Drive by Belmont and Van Ness at any time and you will see all sorts of drug addicts, pushers, pimps, and other assorted low-lifes, standing around with no apparent purpose. They filter into the neighborhood and commit petty crimes.

I'm all for helping people, but shouldn't this place be near a hospital (FCH)? Maybe that makes me a NIMBY, but I'm okay with that. Take them into your neighborhood if you love them so much...

"We at Phi Gamma Delta do not promote good decision making"

How typical. Why does any collage system continue to support these groups that have always been based on looks, race, and how much money your daddy has?

too bad

What can i say, his time surely wasn't now but this is what alcohol consumption does to you ! it can kill you in 30 minutes if you go crazy.

I am a Fiji from UC Irvine and although I do see that the environment in which this young individual was living in was probably not the best one, I do feel that the guys within the fraternity need to be heard. Closing down a chapter due to an individual who was not even affiliated with the chapter at the time of the incident is wrong. The university should have some kind of control for greek housing; like requiring tenants to be full time enrolled students. This could prevent future incidents involving non students, non fraternity members, and the fraternity. The guy who killed himself seemed to be a very depressed individual, and I think that if he didn't kill himself at the house he would have done so somewhere else. It is really hard to see one of your friends being depressed epsecially if he/she is suicidal. I have dealt with a similar case (although no deaths were involved), and it is very hard to get through to some people. Even if the parents are contacted and the University knows that this person is a problem it is still veryhard to get that individual some help unless they truly want help. Now, the environment in which he was living in was probably not the best so this case needs to be looked at with a scrutinous eye, and it needs to be determined if he was provided alcohol by the chapter. If such is the case then the chapter has involved itself in a really big problem. I also want to add that the media is a great way for the public to educate itself about the issues in our society, however I do feel that the media in this case is fairly bias even though that is not how it should be run. I used to write for the newspaper, as a student of course, and I was always held to standards that directed me to write as objective as possible. This is my point of view, and I give my condolensces to the indivuals family.

Danny

The fact that you went to FIJI party's and drank doesn't really matter because that probably was a long time ago its not like the members don't change, but why should my fraternity have to be sacrificed to help serve a wakeup call, We at Phi Gamma Delta do not promote good decision making and it is not your place to criticize how we run our fraternity as a mater of fact I don't even drink I'm 23 years old and I don't even live in the house and don't think we don't know the consequences of drinking but don't you dare think it was the fraternity that promoted his suicide because you don't know the facts and who cares about my spelling this is just a post its not like I care what people are thinking about my spelling you should not try and look for things to tear people down just to further a point that is invalid The news papers exaggerated the story and that is why we will win the appeal and still be able to exist as a non alcoholic fraternity which is better that not existing at all. They didn't make a big deal when the girl at Sigma Nu got rapped a few years ago in fact they only got probation Yes I understand that someone died in this case but it is just a serious Why are we being made an example of?

2 cents

I find it somewhat disturbing that your fraternity takes a "well he did it to himself" attitude about this situation. The fact is that your organization promotes excessive drinking and dangerous behavior. When I was @ CSUF I went to FIJI parties a couple times and most people (including me) drank as much as they could and then drove home.

Instead of saying "oh he was a tenant" why don't you stop and ponder the situation. I think this ban could serve as a wakeup call the Greek system @ Fresno State that your behavior can have dangerous consequences. Whether or not he was a "member" or "tenant" he was still living in an environment that promoted poor decision-making. I'm not saying his death is your fault. However, I implore you to use this sad event as an opportunity to learn and grow.

On a side note, from reading your post any reason for you guys to hit the books instead of the bottles should be applauded.

Danny Daniels

Well I am a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and I dont apreciate people saying that we did nothing to help him first of all Danny was a pledge in the fraternity untill a suicide attempt that happend shortly before his death. After that danny was just renting a room at the fraternity house which is set up as a apartment complex Danny was a tennint nothing more even as a tennint we went to the university and told them that he was a suicide risk the university did nothing and he was in his own apartment dirnking liquer that he got on his own now why should the entire fraternity suffer for this that is why we have take up this appeal and hopefully they will see it our way. As a seinor member of the fraternity In my opinion we would rather exist without drinking privlages than not exist at all.

Identity discovery

I am that Denny. I forgot to mention that the same people who are upset about all of the media reading Danny's MySpace are the same people who told reporters that they were using his page as a memorial. Otherwise, it's unlikely any of us would have either thought to search for his page, or would have found it.

As far as "identity discovery," it really seems to be the point of MySpace, and I think it will create some unique challenges and issues for everyone - parents, children, students, teachers, etc.

My son, for example, has a MySpace page, and chose to list me on his friends page. Does that constitute an invitation to read everything he writes? I've looked at his page, but made the choice to not obsess about what he is writing and doing online. Instead, I have to trust that what he has learned from his family will help him make the right choices.

I'm not that old (34) but when I was 16 this technology wasn't around. I think all the time about how my own father would have dealt with it. It's very interesting.

Thanks for the perspective. I'm assuming you're Denny as in Denny Boyles, the reporter who wrote the Bee article that quoted Daniels' blog?

It seems as though the first 10 years of the popular internet (loosely defined my me based on the birth of the banner advertisement) made people afraid of identity theft. I think we're now starting to see (or should be seeing) fear of identity discovery. Should MySpace and other sites be doing more to remind users about how public their information is?

I'm so looking forward to "I found my daughter naked on MySpace" Oprah segments.

What is private?

I can tell you that the argument for writing about what Danny wrote on his MySpace is something that has already been brought up here - if he had wanted it to be private, it would have been.

Part of his page, specifically one blog entry, was private. The rest wasn't. I wouldn't say it was an easy decision, or one that was lightly made, but thought did go into it.

Since it was done, I've read a lot of comments from people angry about the paper and TV stations using his blog, but few of them angry about the real issues - that a 19-year-old was provided with enough alcohol to kill himself, and that no one answered his numerous calls for help. All of these people that are angry are calling themselves his brothers, but none of them did anything to help him, other than give him another drink. Just my two-cents. Denny

hey...

thanks for the info. :) good to know...i just wasn't sure.

BAC levels

Not really, considering the legal limit is .08. From Wikipedia.com, I found the following...
Unless a person has developed a high tolerance, a BAC rating of 0.20 represents very serious intoxication (most first-time drinkers would be passed out by about 0.15), and 0.35 represents potentially fatal alcohol poisoning. 0.40 is the accepted LD50, or lethal dose for 50% of adult humans.

weird...

the fresno bee reported that this daniel fellow died of acute alcohol poisoning with a blood alcohol level of .34...well...doesn't that seem a bit low for alcohol poisoning? maybe not...i don't know.
