Guided Walk: Winter Bird Visitors at Kaweah Oaks Preserve

Winter Bird Visitors at Kaweah Oaks Preserve

What: An easy, guided walk through Sequoia Riverlands Trust’s Kaweah Oaks Preserve

Why: Kaweah Oaks Preserve provides important habitat for birds, with 144 bird species recorded since 1983. Come to Kaweah Oaks Preserve as a "winter visitor" so you can meet and get better acquainted with these feathered winter visitors and find out what makes them so special.

Who: Rob Hansen, local biologist, biology instructor at College of the Sequoias, member of the Audubon Society and vice president for Sequoia Riverlands Trust, will lead this walk for beginning birders, experienced birders and non-birders who would like to learn about birding.

Where: Kaweah Oaks Preserve is located on Road 182, approximately seven miles east of downtown Visalia via Highway 198. Drive north on Road 182 one-half mile. Meet in the parking lot on the west side of the road.

Bring: Water, bird book (optional), binoculars and a friend. Warm clothes and rain gear recommended; wear sturdy shoes, sunglasses and a hat. Please, no dogs.

The 324-acre Kaweah Oaks Preserve, owned and managed by Sequoia Riverlands Trust, protects one of the last remaining valley oak riparian forests in the San Joaquin Valley. Visiting Kaweah Oaks, we can imagine how this area looked before it was settled over 150 years ago. Today, more than 300 plant and animal species call the preserve home, including gray fox, great horned owl, Nuttall's woodpecker, valley elderberry longhorn beetle and valley oaks. The preserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset and features four short self-guided nature trails.

Sequoia Riverlands Trust is a 501(c)(3) community-based, non-profit dedicated to conserving the natural and agricultural legacy of the southern Sierra Nevada and San Joaquin Valley.
