So I've noticed how 733t the code is over here at Famous, so here's an idea:
Since you guys are doing amazing things with the Google maps API, why not see if you can integrate it with some Wiki software to make a nice little user-edited map of Fresno, so that we can share all of our favorite places with each other? You could have different tags for the types of place you're looking for, maybe a little paragraph description in the pop-up... you get the picture.
How easy/hard would this be? I think it would be a pretty kick ass addition to FF.
In other news, I don't think Famous People is working right. Alans profile isn't showing up.
always more complicated...
Isn't it always more complicated than we would like. :)
Since you seem interested in this stuff, the geocoder snippets you pointed to (mapki is cool) actually use a similar process to the one we have integrated into events. The mapki code uses geocoder.us to create/read an xml file, our interface grabs the data and populates the database with the coordinates so they can be reused with each page load. FWIW, yahoo's geocoder API is way more accurate for street level mapping. I haven't had time to look into integrating that into drupal yet. Works great in my non-drupal tests though!! (kinda like the arthop map, which i actually have to pull in via iframe because Internet Explorer sucks so hard).
At some point in the future we will have venues hooked into events here so you won't have to retype them unless they are new.
The wiki integration has not been tabled, just backburnered for now.
Yeah, it looks a bit more
Yeah, it looks a bit more complicated than I thought. I found a swell PHP script for retreiving lat/long data from an address here, but it looks like wiki implementation is not strongly supported. There's a module here, but it looks as though everything would have to be heavily customized. :/
Still, it would be fun. If I suddenly find myself with an overabundance of time (Ha!) I'll just go ahead and re-learn all the languages I've willfully forgotten and whip something up (also ha!).
Keep up the good work there, suzi, this sight is fantastic.
sandboxes...
We have banged the wiki idea around for a while now, like for at least a year, thinking this may be a good thing for ArtHop. The thing with map integration is you need longitude/latitide data for each map point, which could not be generated by a wiki. We're also not 100% keen on any of the drupal wiki implementations. That said, we have lots of things in the works for ArtHop and beefing things up for spring. I LOVE that you have such good ideas. Please keep 'em coming!
An aside - i had to look up 733t - no clue what that meant. thanks!
Famous people is fixed. We had it linking to the main list (vs) the profile and changed that. Thanks for letting us know.
