dinner review - mr. sushi
March 12, 2008
i've been waiting ages for a sushi place to open in my neighborhood. there was one years ago, but that's history, this is now. so, when i saw that a sushi place was going in a few months ago, i early anticipated the day it would open and i would eat there. i wasn't able to get there on opening day, but four days later is pretty good.
i went there with two other people, and we were quickly seated. the restaurant has twenty tables that seat four, and could be pushed together for bigger groups. they also have a bar that seats twenty or so. we were seated at a table next to the front window, which is nice because it affords some people watching while you eat.
for our dinner, we ordered several rolls, some maguro (tuna) and some edamame. the edamame appetizer came out first and was piping hot. it could have used a little more salt for my taste, but still a good start.
i had the maguro and it was delicious. the tuna melted in my mouth, tasted perfectly fresh, and, well, was delicious. i also had the tiger roll, which was a california roll topped with shrimp and eel. the flavor of the roll was very good, and the eel had a nice little crunch to it.
my wife had a cucumber roll that she thought was sort of average. she felt that there was a bit too much sesame on the roll for her taste. and, she also put a little too much wasabi in her dish so it was pretty spicy, but that was her bad.
our friend ordered the asparagus roll and the spicy tuna roll. he said the asparagus roll was good, and even though the asparagus was steamed it still had a good crunch to it. the spicy tuna roll was fantastic! it's tuna with a spicy sauce and some yellow onion, although the onion was faint if even there. but he loved it.
the restaurant had a nice atmosphere, with good music. my friend ate there the other day and they told him that the owner picks all the music, and it's mostly 80's & 90's stuff.
the food was a good price and the portions were sensible. honestly, i've eaten @ some other sushi restaurants in fresno and felt stuffed after the meal. tonight, just right. and the prices were nice. the only drawback was that we didn't get a refill on our drinks. but hey, it's only the first week they're open, i'm sure they'll get all the kinks iron out.

and i'm calling it mr. sushi even if the sign and the top of the menu look like mr. mr. sushi. the deal in the window is just mr. sushi.

happy star
my boyfriend and i got sick on valentines day from happy star. i ate there a month ago and it was good. the diamond roll is yummy
they still get my business
so, i went to mr. sushi tonight for dinner. it's been a while, and i had heard they had some new waitresses so i was hoping that the service would be improving. we actually had a waitress that previously had served us. she was much better than before, came by often enough, and refilled the sodas on the table. good stuff.
i had one of the chef's special rolls, the volcano roll. it had whitefish on the outside with tempura shrimp or crab in it (i forgot which one it was). but it was very good. i also ordered a sashimi plate. i had thought that one of the drawbacks to the place had been the lack of a sashimi plate, and now they have several to pick from (different amount of fish). i had the 7 piece and it was soooooo freakin good.
great time tonight. i even saw a shirt that looked cool and i would wear, but alas, it was a girl's shirt.
Mr Sushi
I am one man, and my review of Mr Sushi is applicable to me, but the truth be told the service still sucks!
After my latest bad experience at Mr Sushi I am done. I won't be recommending it any longer. I am tired of waiting to be served, have my drinks refilled...you get the picture.
It wasn't so bad if I went and sat at the bar to eat. (Cause Lee was the best sushi chef in the building. And he's no longer working there!) The service was quick and the fish was fresh. Of course, it is a sit down establishment and the service at the table should be equal to that of the bar. Or so one would expect.
There is a sign on the wall by the cashiers station that says "No phones during work." Well I'll be damned if my waitress wasn't using her phone to send and receive text messages. I suppose that this is but one of the reasons that our orders were being sent to the wrong tables. It was so bad the girl that actually took our order delivered our food to a table where the people were still looking at the menus.
Service is so bad that another waitress delivered someone else's roll to our table. We told her that we didn't order that particular roll. Luckily the people who ordered that particular roll were sitting at the table behind ours.
This isn't the first time that I haven't tipped the wait staff for lousy service, but this last time was the first time that I didn't leave a tip for the sushi chef.
The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing at Mr Sushi. And what is perhaps the most laughable moment of the night, I was actually wearing a Mr Sushi t-shirt. You'd think that they'd at least want to provide service to someone who is walking around advertising their establishment.
Well I won't be wearing the t-shirt nor will I be a patron at Mr Sushi. My business will be heading downtown to Sushi Hana on Kern St.
Caveat emptor
You want bad service World Grill and Buffet Chinese
Its on Blackstone by Sierra next to the tux place.
The service was bad.
Had to ask for drink refills.
The meat was poor quality drowning in sauces.
A sign of low quality.
After I paid the waiter had the nerve to say "It customary to leave tip"
I told him "No!".
Tip for what?
It's a buffet you serve yourself and they dont
even want to refill the drinks.
They are not doing anything to tip for.
A few weeks later my friend went back and they told him I was not allowed back because I dont tip.
The food is bad.
The waiters don't do anything.
Here is your tip boy.
You run away now. You run fast.
I reported your illegal chinese slave labor to immigration.
I would not eat there again but might go back to see if they refuse service.
a known fact
It's a known fact to sit at the Sushi Bar at a Sushi restaurant if you want the best quality and service. Also always ask the chief what's good, and let him pick for you.
If you want more helpful hints check out all the Sushi etiquette websites.
one remedy
i've talked to a few people and eavesdropped on a few conversations lately about mr. sushi. word on the street is to sit @ the sushi bar if you can. the sushi chefs are on top of things, make sure your service is quick and good.
i realize this isn't the best solution if your party is bigger than two, but if you can it works.
mr sushi...
I live in Tower. I love sushi. I was really pleased to see one open so close that i could walk to. I was even more pleased that the food was as good as it was. The service sucked. I've been three times and the service has gotten worse each time. After the last time, it was actually so bad that I vowed to rather drive as far as I needed to just to make sure I didn't eat at Mr. Sushi again. It's too bad if a small business opens and fails do to lack of supervision of the servers. I can say though, that the food was good enough that I'll give that I'll give them a few months to fix the problem and try it again.
I appreciate the compliments and advices you give us on here. Yes we are new to the game, but I'm truly sorry for any misorder or missed refills... Yes, its going to take sometime getting everything sort out. but we have been trying our best lately. Yes and I agree friday nights, it does get a little too loud. But if there were anything, anything at all i rather you let us know then and there, so that we can take care of it right away. We will continue to try harder and improve our service. if there are any other questions or concern please let us know...
thank you again...
mr sushi
gene, thanks for reading and commenting. as you can see in the above comments, there's room to grow.
my own particulars: the waitresses seem to forget about you after your order. in my two trips, drink refills were nonexistant (on a soda or a water). on my second trip, the server never brought the bill, and when we went up and got it, she was uncertain on the prices of the items.
but i've loved the food.
Hi,
I work there at mrs. sushi, please help us improve.
any advice and comment would be nice.
thanx..
went there again
i went there for my second visit last night, with a friend who has been there four times. we were sat within a minute or so minutes of coming in, and i would say that at least 3/4 of the tables were being used.
we ordered 3 rolls (orange blossom, shrimp tempura, crunch roll) that took about ten minutes to come out. i was surprised about this time because so many had complained about the time it's taking for food to come out. our rolls were all very good.
what i have noticed in my two visit is that the service needs to step up a bit. both times that i've been there i haven't been able to get a refill on my drink. last night, my friend flagged down our waitress because he was thirsty, too, and we were both out of drink. and then, our bill didn't seem to be coming, so we just went up and paid.
so, i've enjoyed the food, i hope that they get something up on the blank walls, and i hope the service improves a little.
(as for million elephant, it's still there, i just think they've either cut out lunch completely or scaled way back. but they're still there for dinner, and still open until 3 on some nights.)
Went there.
I went during lunch hour on Friday and was sadly disappointed. I too have been awaiting a sushi joint near my home. I rate it a 6 out of a 10. First it was warmer than a hot tamale in there. Also they took forever to seat us. The food was mediocore, (I prefer Naked Fish) and the veggie roll I ordered was warm. I do hope they improve. I have taken into consideration they have just opened and have been in deep prayer for them in improve quckly. I would love to see them stay long term, gas prices are skyhigh and the NAked Fish is to far. I will point out the good in my lengthy visit to Mr. Suschi-1. good music 2. nice space from table to table 3. pleasing staff 4. beautifully decorated bathroom (it smelled like pepper in there, wasn't me). and lastly, seaweed. What happened to Million Elephant? Anybody?
PROBLEM at Mr. Sushi
We showed up this past Friday night around 9:30-10 for dinner and the music was louder than any club I have ever been in! And this is a restaurant? I can understand turning things up a bit on Friday night but I would highly suggest they keep the music at a level where customers can engage in conversation without shouting loudly to be able to hear each other! It was so loud I found it too painful to even try eating there, which is a huge shame. I would love to have at least tried the food. I noticed a few others like us who walked in and then walked right out around the same time. I hope that someone who works there will see this suggestion. Loud music + dancing works just fine...loud music + eating just feels uncomfortable. Oh and one other thing (which wouldn't have deterred me from staying around long enough to try the food)...please turn down the lights! They were SO bright! This place has clearly not quite figured out how to set the mood yet. I hope they do because I think we have a lot of potential here!
Im happy for Mr Mr Sushi Sushi.
We like the japaneseie food and its great that its down the street from us.
I dont like Happy Star because the smell in the place is awful. You are clawing at a window by the time your food comes.
Nothing says happiness like a don-buri at 1 am!
good review, Ed
I'm not much of a raw food sort of chap...
(though I do like california roles and such,) I just never have been able to get the concept of 'bait,' out of my mind,
(well, that and I used to work at a seafood joint back in highschool... used to line up all the squids in a chorus line and dance them across the counter... sounds easy? you try it, little slimy tentacles waving all over the place...
'crunchy eel' indeed.
I'm trying to remember the article that I first read so many years ago, on the meanings of the names for the different types of sushi:
-I think miniature carp (goldfish,) were called:
'eenie-weenie'
-Porcupine Fish:
'owie-owie'
and
'Bowhunka,'
was whale anus or something...
Ohhhh
Passed by this place when they were still working on it and both my friend JC and I had to stop and gasp. Sushi in the Tower?! HELL YEAH!! Can't wait to try it out!
happy star
i have tried happy star. and, i was really disappointed with the sushi there. the teriyaki wasn't bad though.
Hmph
My boyfriend and I ate there tonight and by the time we got back to his house we were both feeling ill... >.< But the food was pretty good. Have you tried Happy Star? On Palm just south of Olive.
Oh SWEET!
Thanks for the menu link!

well
i'm not seeing uni w/raw quail eggs on the menu. and they don't have sashimi plates, but the do serve nigiri, so i'm guessing they could make a sashimi plate.
many of the items on the menu are rolls. if you click over to the beehive review, you can see scans of the whole menu.
Do they have monk fish liver?
Or Uni w/ raw quail egg?
Is it mainly just the Cali style stuff you guys ordered?
Sashimi plates?
Going next week Tuesday for lunch...
