Olympic skiier Andy Finch blogging at the Beehive

Fresno native Andy Finch is in Turin competing on the US Olympic snowbaord team and blogging on the Beehive. We think this is great, especially in light of the ridiculous International Olympic Committee ban on athletes blogging.

The ban caused a rukus when it was announced in 2004. From a USA Today story back then:

The IOC's rationale for the restrictions is that athletes and their coaches should not serve as journalists : and that the interests of broadcast rightsholders and accredited media come first.

The IOC is afraid Olympians blogging will take away the audience for the "accredited media" that pays through the nose to broadcast the games. The Japanese team has told its athletes not to blog for fear of disqualification.

We don't know if the Bee got IOC clearance, is taking a principled stand, or just wasn't aware of the regulation, but we're glad they're giving Finch a platform.
