"Urinetown": YOU'VE GOTTA GO!
First, you need to know that I don't even like musicals--I went only because my husband and I had season tickets for all the Fresno State plays this season. I read what the Bee had to say about it, and I thought it sounded silly or ho-hum--almost like a singing melodrama.
BUT NO! THIS SHOW IS SO FUNNY THAT YOU MUST GO! This show had the entire audience laughing from beginning to end. Even the musical numbers are hilarious (and usually, in a musical, I'm dreading the musical numbers--usually when they start to sing, I'm thinking, oh God, not again). I loved every minute, even the singing and dancing. Songs like "It's a Privilege to Pee" are hilarious, yes, but the performers are extremely talented as well.
It was first on Broadway in 2002 (give or take a year) and it has an extremely current sense of humor. It was nominated for about a dozen Tonys and won three.
At intermission, I was talking to a stranger, who was visiting from San Francisco for the weekend--she was really impressed with how well done it was, and she asked me if all the shows are this good (and Fresno State does do consistently wonderful shows, I told her, although this one is particularly good). She really went on and on about not only how great it was, but how surprised she was to find something like that, in Fresno, in a random google search.
So...everyone who says there's not much to do in Fresno, you owe it to yourselves to check out this show and have a nice time!

In a Gotham-like city, a depletion of the earth's water supply has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets, and corporate control of public toilets. Urinetown has been praised by critics as one of the most jubilant theatrical experiences to hit the American musical stage in recent years.
