FUSD to hear plans for arts charter school

Downtown could be getting a new elementary school. A local group has plans to form a new charter school in the Cultural Arts District, that neighborhood in Downtown bordered by Tuolumne and Divsadero, H Street and Blackstone. Dubbed the Valley Arts and Science Academy (or VASA), the school would integrate its curriculum with the cultural institutions in the neighborhood- like the Met and Arte Americas. The focus would be on science and the arts.

The Fresno Unified School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to hold a hearing on the groups charter. Project Director Brad Huff said in an email to supporters, "We need to focus on the positive benefits VASA will offer to children living downtown and throughout the Fresno area."

The Board could choose to deny, approve, or approve with conditions the charter for VASA.
