Hundreds of Fresno high school students walked out of class and marched in Downtown Fresno to protest the immigration bill being discussed in the Senate, which would make it a felony to enter the country illegally. They marched right past Famous HQ around 11am, waving Mexican flags and chanting "Mexico!" One student was shouting, "Puerto Rico!"
They were joined by almost 15,000 students in the Los Angeles area to protest the bill. Lt Gov. and Fresno native Cruz Bustamante was there to support the students and applaud thier civic action.
In Fresno Unified, 57% of all students are of Hispanic origin.
UPDATE: In a victory for protesters, on Monday the Senate Judiciary Committee approved immigration legislation that clears the way for 11 million illegal aliens to become US citizens. Provisions to make illegal immigration a felony were removed, and a 5-year ag worker program pushed by Diane Feinstein would allow 1.5 million laborers to come to this country. The committee also removed provisions that would criminalize assitance to illegal immigrants.
