Hope for Lipari's

Mixed reviews abound for the new Italian place in the Tower. Being a brave and curious soul I decided to check it out for myself last week (despite the rumors of wheat-bread bruschetta. yes i was really hungry).

The place is totally cute. It has a great outdoor patio and bar. The inside is filled with booths and fun little lights, plus there's a bar there too. I think they know their patrons too well already. For all you laptop users: no wi-fi but there's a plug under every booth!

Here's the thing about Lipari's. It's affordable. Entrees are around $10 - $15 as opposed to many of the other Tower eateries that come in at twice the price. My point is: gauge your culinary expectations accordingly. You won't get an organic spring mix salad, you get iceberg lettuce. Mine was fresh other than the raw onions. ick. Gotta warn people about that stuff. The dry bleu made it all better. I ordered the Chicken Alfredo as an entree. It was totally respectable comfort food. The penne was overcooked, but not mushy. The mushrooms were fresh, chicken was tender, alfredo sauce was way gooey and there was lots left over for lunch. The house Chianti was cheap and totally decent.

I saw a woman eating bruschetta up at the bar. No wheat bread in sight. Whew!

Lipari's is not perfect, but I'll go back again and hope things continue to improve.

Lipari's

The last time I discussed the restaurant with Steve Lipari he explained to me that he was not going to be advertising for a while. He wants to spend some time training the right staff and refining the menu. He said, "This is not my restaurant, it is owned by you and the rest of the Tower District. I want to hear what you have to say and I invite any and all suggestions."

I know he spent 3 years going through a lot of red tape and a large sum of money to build the place. Opening the doors when he did was more about bringing in some revenue through the bar while working on any other problem areas. This is a work in progress. Criticizing or praising the place at this time seems to be a bit premature and counter to Lipari's philosophy in making this a community effort.

My suggestion to any one that has a problem with the food, service or operation of Lipari's is to discuss it with Steve. I'm sure he would love to hear from you.
